Seventeen-year-old John D. O’Toole waded ashore at Salerno, Italy on September 9th with the very first
assault wave and had been fighting every day since. Finally, catching a break, his unit is loaded into trucks
and sent off in pursuit of a high ranking German officer, who, too valuable to lose, was beating a hasty exit
from the battlefield. When German artillery fire decimates the convoy, O’Toole is blown clear of the truck.
Disoriented, with no weapon, food, or water, he is alone and behind enemy lines. Evading capture, O’Toole
stumbles onto a farm where a young girl his age, finds him napping by a creek. This turns out to be another
break, as the young girl, Marcella Farese, hides O’Toole in the cow barn and brings food to her “Soldato
Americano.” Marcella and John, two young kids in war-torn Italy, soon find themselves in love and pledge
to be married. The only problem is, O’Toole is Missing in Action! He has to get back to his unit. Tragedy
strikes again, and German artillery hits the farmhouse where Marcella and her family live. Devastated,
believing Marcella to be dead, O’Toole finally reconnects with an American unit. But, how can he ever
forget Marcella? No woman could ever replace her. A short time later, after being shot in the ankle while on
patrol, O’Toole finds himself discharged and headed home to East Tennessee. But what of Marcella? Is she
truly dead? Or, will these star-crossed lovers someday be reunited? There is only one way to find out!
