The Movimentos Festival in Wolfsburg is an
extraordinary celebration of dance – yet it
remains somewhat of an insider’s tip internationally.
Modern architecture enthusiasts may be
familiar with Wolfsburg as the home of the
Phæno Science Center, a futuristic building
designed by Zaha Hadid. More importantly,
the city – located halfway between Berlin
and Hanover – is steeped in automotive
industry tradition. Wolfsburg is the global
headquarters of the Volkswagen Group. The
four smokestacks towering above the former
power station known as the KraftWerk dominate
the skyline of the Autostadt, or ‘Car City,’
a museum complex built just ten years ago.
Vehicles both old and new are showcased in
a number of European-style pavilions – that is,
reminiscent of Hollywood with added sense
of chic and good taste. A series of interactive
exhibits addresses environmental issues in
the largest of the buildings, the GroupWorld.
This structure is essentially the heart of the
city-within-a-city, a place to reflect on the
development of mankind and human travel.
What better way to illustrate the concepts
of human evolution, travel and movement
than with a dance festival? The Movimentos
Festival is staged each year in April and May
in the former power plant, which has been
completely revamped. Improbable locations
sometimes provide an unpredictably powerful

Encore trop peu connu des francophones, le
Movimentos de Wolfsburg est un extraordinaire
festival de danse.
De Wolfsburg (en Allemagne, entre Hanovre et
Berlin), les férus d’architecture contemporaine
connaissent le Phaeno, le bâtiment futuriste
de Zaha Hadid mais plus encore le patrimoine
industriel car la ville abrite la firme Volkswagen.
Les quatre cheminées du KraftWerk, l’ancienne
usine, dominent une ville musée sortie
de terre il y a tout juste dix ans : l’Autostadt, la
cité de l’auto. Les bolides anciens et nouveaux
y sont présentés dans plusieurs pavillons dans
une scénographie à l’européenne ; c’est à dire
hollywoodienne, le chic et le bon goût en plus.
Grâce à des expériences interactives, sont
évoquées les questions environnementales
dans le KonzernWelt, le plus grand bâtiment.
C’est un peu le cœur de cette cité, un lieu où en
toute objectivité, l’on s’interroge sur le devenir
de l’homme et de ses déplacements.
L’évolution, l’homme se déplaçant, l’homme
en mouvement… ces concepts ne pouvaient
trouver meilleure illustration que dans un
festival de danse. Chaque année, en avril et
mai, le Movimentos se tient dans l’ancienne
centrale électrique entièrement réhabilitée.
Il est parfois des lieux improbables où l’on
n’imaginerait pas l’émotion possible et pourtant…
L’extraordinaire bâtiment ouvre ses
portes spécialement pour l’occasion. Grâce
à un savant jeu de lumière et une formidable
réorganisation de l’espace intérieur, l’ancienne
usine se transforme en théâtre. Ce qui fut
l’objet industriel de la technique froide devient
un décor, un temple moderne qui accueille les
corps, les danseurs et la musique. Chaque
année, le festival invite la fine fleur des chorégraphes
contemporains. La programmation
exigeante est une parfaite image du meilleur
de la création, une très belle porte ouverte
vers les nouveaux horizons. Le Movimentos
est sans doute l’un des meilleurs festival de
danse contemporaine en Europe.
Cette saison est particulièrement riche en
rendez-vous avec la venue de la Danza Contemporánea
de Cuba et du Cloud Gate Dance

backdrop for great emotions. The doors of the
building are opened especially for this occasion.
A combination of skilful lighting and a
remarkable reorganization of the interior space
have transformed the former power plant into
a theatre. What were once cold industrial
elements have now become scenery, creating a
modern temple for the ensembles, the dancers
and the music. Each year, the organizers invite
the crème-de-la-crème of contemporary dance
choreographers to the festival. The demanding
program is the perfect reflection of the very
best in artistic creation – a delightful gateway
to new horizons. Movimentos is undoubtedly
one of Europe’s top contemporary dance
festivals.
Of exceptionally high quality, this year’s edition
of the Movimentos Festival features Danza
Contemporánea de Cuba and the Cloud Gate
Dance Theatre of Taiwan. Other highlights
include – as if in homage to one of the founders
of contemporary dance – a festival premiere
by the Béjart Ballet performing choreographies
that best represent this grand master. Another
important event will be the return of Sidi
Larbi Cherkaoui, an extraordinary dancer and
choreographer who subtly blends a wide range
of influences. His highly personal sensibilities
add a universal appeal to his performances.

forts, tout d’abord, comme un hommage à l’un
des fondateurs de la danse moderne, le festival
reçoit pour la première fois le Béjart Ballet
avec les chorégraphies les plus représentatives
du grand maître. Autre grand événement,
le retour du formidable Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui,
extraordinaire danseur et chorégraphe qui a su
intégré subtilement de multiples influences.
Grâce à une sensibilité toute personnel, ses
spectacles atteignent souvent l’universel.
