The update of the National Wetland Plant List reflects the efforts of many
people from across the country, a list way too long to include here. The author
thanks the other members of the National Panel, who worked as a solid
team to get this list through a lengthy process; they are Mary
Butterwick, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Bill Kirchner, U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS); and Norm Melvin, Natural Resources
Conservation Service. The author recognizes the great efforts put forth by
the Regional Panel members and their alternates, who did the bulk of the
heavy lifting. Behind the scenes were the critical workers, including John
Kartesz and Misako Nishirno and their amazing database; John Guineau,
web programmer; Jennifer Gillrich, who kept it all straight near the end;
and Lindsey Lefebvre, who was just there and did the endless lists of
items. The author also thanks Meg Gaffney-Smith, Karen Mulligan, Mark
Sudol, and Kathy Trott, from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters,
who believed in this effort and never doubted that this project was going in
the right direction. Also, the author thanks the other collaborating agencies
for supplying people and knowledge. Bill Wilen (FWS) was the key
person who had the vision for this project and who helped make a lot of
the critical links behind the scenes in Washington that brought many key
elements together. Finally, the original efforts and energy put forth by Porter
(Buck) Reed made it possible to build upon a sound legacy.
