Fast Colours was written to be a showpiece, and a relatively lightweight divertimento, perhaps to open or close a concert programme. Although there are two slower episodes the pace of the music is generally very rapid; and the colours in the sense of instrumentation, harmony, manner of playing, etc, also tend to change quickly. But there are many constants as the (intentionally) punning title suggests.
