Originally commissioned by the BBC, this choral ballet is themed around spring, rebirth, nature and the English rites surrounding them. Complex in its counterpoint, mixed metres, and combinations of more than one key at once, the music is underpinned by English folk influences throughout. Each movement evokes a different atmosphere, the mood varying from serene and lyrical to declamatory and full of rhythmic vitality.
