BC40 Canticles of Light is a dark and beautiful work in three movements that explores as its theme the transcendence of bleak darkness through the promise of light and hope. The first two movements, ‘Te lucis ante terminum’, and ‘Christe, qui, splendor et dies’, set evening hymns asking for God’s protection during the coming hours of darkness, whereas the cathartic final movement, ‘O nata lux de lumine’, is a morning hymn that looks forward to a new beginning through Christ. This is an approachable composition that is nevertheless taut and skilfully argued, where the timeless resonance of the Latin texts is matched and amplified by the composer’s fine choral and orchestral writing. Bob Chilcott has been involved with choral music all his life, first as a chorister and then a Choral Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge. Later, he sang and composed music for twelve years with the King’s Singers. His experiences with that group, his passionate commitment to young and amateur choirs, and his profound belief that music can unite people, have inspired him both to compose full time and, through proactive workshopping, promote choral music worldwide.
