Grace Williams - Penillion

for full orchestra A four-movement suite for orchestra written in 1955, in Penillion, Williams adapts characteristics from 'canu penillion' or 'cerdd dant' (penillion singing); a Welsh tradition going back centuries. âPenillion is the Welsh word for stanzas. It gives the impression of being a free improvisation, sung to the accompaniment of a Welsh air played on the harp. This orchestral suite breaks with tradition in many respects: it does not include any Welsh airs, and there is not always a contrast between the Penillion and the accompaniment. Nevertheless, it retains the narrative style, stanza form, and many melodic and rhythmic characteristics of traditional Penillion. 9780193688810
