for Chamber orchestra
Commissioned and first performed by the London Mozart Players in 1977, it is in the first instance a closely argued and highly integrated set of orchestral variations. The material is wholly derived from two ideas immediately exposed in the opening Introduction, which then leads on to 12 variations. The Dance element in the work’s title derives from the fact that each variation contributes its own characteristic dramatic or lyrical gesture, giving the whole something of the spirit of an abstract ballet.
