REASURES Five special treasures in the Salzkammergut and Salzburg City reveal new perspectives and promise valuable experiences around nature, culture and cuisine. Back in imperial times, the SchafbergBahn funicular was already huffing and puffing up the steep mountain meadows towards the summit, while passengers on the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt ferries watched it from aboard ship. To this day, passengers never fail to be exhilarated by the experience, even though these remnants of the past have long since become powered by modern technology. The same goes for our other treasures in the city of Mozart, Salzburg: the MönchsbergAufzug lift and the FestungBahn funicular in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both went into operation in the 19th century, now carrying you in a matter of seconds onto the Mönchsberg where Hohensalzburg Fortress and the "Museum der Moderne" await. This forested city mountain is a true natural jewel with woodlands and meadows, secret paths and stone stairways, ruins and discrete stately homes. The interactive exhibition at the WasserSpiegel museum on the Mönchsberg is dedicated to yet another treasure of Salzburg AG Tourismus GmbH, namely the city’s drinking water.

DISCOVERY TOUR ON THE TRAIL OF THE WET ELEMENT In the WasserSpiegel on the Mönchsberg, immerse yourself in the secrets of water. Water is a playful thing: It makes sense, then, that an exhibition focused on this wet element would also invite you to interact and experiment. Which is exactly what the Wasser- Spiegel does: In addition to numerous interactive stations, a laboratory gives children and teens the opportunity to conduct fun experiments as they explore water and its unique characteristics. The location for this exhibition wasn‘t chosen by chance. In fact, there are very concrete reasons: It was here on the Mönchsberg, close to the historic Richterhöhe, that an imposing mountain reservoir for drinking water was constructed in 1950. It can hold up to 25 million liters of drinking water, is 8.5 m deep and is today part of the Water Museum. For decades, drinking water from springs and natural sources located in Salzburg‘s surrounding communities has been pumped to this mighty holding tank, before continuing on its journey into the city itself: the broad network of pipes extends 870 km - roughly the same distance as from Salzburg to Copenhagen. The drinking water then pours from the taps into Salzburg homes, clear, clean and fresh with no further processing necessary. OFFER EVENT-TIP Enjoy a special family day at museum Wasser- Spiegel to celebrate Drinking Water Day (15 June). More details at 5treasures.com.
