REASURES Five special treasures in the Salzkammergut and Salzburg City reveal new perspectives and promise valuable experiences around nature, culture and cuisine. Back in imperial times, the SchafbergBahn funicular was already huffing and puffing up the steep mountain meadows towards the summit, while passengers on the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt ferries watched it from aboard ship. To this day, passengers never fail to be exhilarated by the experience, even though these remnants of the past have long since become powered by modern technology. The same goes for our other treasures in the city of Mozart, Salzburg: the MönchsbergAufzug lift and the FestungBahn funicular in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both went into operation in the 19th century, now carrying you in a matter of seconds onto the Mönchsberg where Hohensalzburg Fortress and the "Museum der Moderne" await. This forested city mountain is a true natural jewel with woodlands and meadows, secret paths and stone stairways, ruins and discrete stately homes. The interactive exhibition at the WasserSpiegel museum on the Mönchsberg is dedicated to yet another treasure of Salzburg AG Tourismus GmbH, namely the city’s drinking water.

THE SUMMITEER
Heavenly scenery with the SchafbergBahn cog railway
The SchafbergBahn – a masterpiece of mobility when it was
inaugurated – is still the steepest cog railway in Austria. Now
as then, the “Grande Dame of Cog Railways” excites people
from around the world: One of the most famous attractions in
the Salzkammergut, it offers excursioners a hugely enjoyable
way to reach those high-alpine elevations, with fantastic scenery
and unforgettable mountain experiences guaranteed.
The ride on the SchafbergBahn to just below the 1783 m high
summit takes about 35 minutes, and you might wish it would
last even longer considering the imposing views this cog
railway treats you to along the way. With every vertical meter
and every bend, your perspective of the world changes. At the
top, 14 lakes lie right there at your feet. And in good visibility,
you can gaze out all the way to the Hohe Tauern range and
the mighty Grossglockner.
Your journey takes you from St. Wolfgang across the provincial
border between Upper Austria and Salzburg, passing
through meadows and forests as far as the Dorneralm siding
(elev. 1015 m). The ride continues to the Schafbergalm halt
(1364 m), which has been painstakingly restored true to its
historical forebear. For the last ten minutes before reaching
the Schafbergspitze mountain station (1732 m), the SchafbergBahn
chugs steeply uphill one last time.
CULINARY DELIGHTS
SCHAFBERG MOUNTAIN
Big adventures tend to work up an equally big appetite.
Around the summit of the Schafberg Mountain, culinary
delights and regional specialties await you.
Punctually for the opening of the 2023 season and to mark
the 130 th birthday of the SchafbergBahn, the newly constructed
and ultramodern valley station of the SchafbergBahn cog
railway was opened. The so-called ExperienceQuarter doesn’t
only boast an all-weather station and a shop, but also a small
Museum Zone that presents a colorful history of the SchafbergBahn
and WolfgangseeSchifffahrt. An old locomotive
from the year 1893 is the centerpiece of the exhibition.
Culinary enjoyment isn’t neglected either, thanks to Café &
Restaurant EQ in the ExperienceQuarter: Here you can also
Schafberg from one of the most beautiful lakeside terraces on
Wolfgangsee.
use of natural building materials and the replacement of
outdated oil heating with modern heat pumps, the ExperienceQuarter
Ferries have been running on Lake Wolfgangsee since
imperial times.
On May 20, 1873, the paddle steamer “Kaiser Franz Josef I“
set sail for the first time. This 33-meters-long ship with its
powerful paddle-wheels was regarded as a major technological
achievement in its day. Now as then, this photogenic
vintage ship shuttles between the towns of St. Wolfgang and
St. Gilgen, and is one of the fleet‘s main attractions. The difference
to earlier is that today’s vessel is no longer powered
by steam, but rather a diesel engine.
As the biggest inland passenger shipping fleet in Austria,
WolfgangseeSchifffahrt ferries invites guests to hop on or hop
On the FestungsBahn to the joys of nature above
the city’s rooftops.
A little hidden away, the FestungsBahn is pressed tightly
against the steep, rocky mountain deep in the heart of
UNESCO World Heritage-listed Salzburg and at the foot of
Hohensalzburg Fortress itself. It is ultramodern and one of the
most popular methods of transportation in the city of Mozart.
In the roughly 130 years of its existence, it has been used by
passengers in order to conquer Salzburg‘s iconic sightseeing
attraction in only 54 seconds.
First operating on water power, it began service in 1892: Even
back then, the intention was to save visitors the steep slog on
foot all the way up to the fortress. After multiple modernizatons,
the FestungsBahn now proudly boasts being the oldest
ART AND NATURE
EXPERIENCES
Float high above the rooftops of the city of Mozart with
the MönchsbergAufzug lift.
A 60 m tall lift inside the rock of the Mönchsberg, performing
its duty now for over 130 years: In 30 seconds, the MönchsbergAufzug
carries passengers from the Salzburg historic
district up to one of the most spectacular photo points on the
Mönchsberg. Here, amid this extensive green oasis in the
heart of the city, culture, nature and cuisine enter into a unique
and, in many regards, quite surprising symbiosis.
Whether walking, hiking, biking, jogging, trail running or
bouldering: The Mönchsberg beckons you to enjoy outdoor
exercise in combination with culinary stops and cultural forays.
Visits to the Museum der Moderne, the WasserSpiegel, the
“Sky Space” on the “Walk of Modern Art” and Hohensalzburg
Fortress are highly recommended.
ART PACKAGES
to pure art enjoyment: Attractive combo
DISCOVERY TOUR
ON THE TRAIL OF
THE WET ELEMENT
In the WasserSpiegel on the Mönchsberg, immerse
yourself in the secrets of water.
Water is a playful thing: It makes sense, then, that an exhibition
focused on this wet element would also invite you to
interact and experiment. Which is exactly what the Wasser-
Spiegel does: In addition to numerous interactive stations,
a laboratory gives children and teens the opportunity to
conduct fun experiments as they explore water and its unique
characteristics. The location for this exhibition wasn‘t chosen
by chance. In fact, there are very concrete reasons: It was here
on the Mönchsberg, close to the historic Richterhöhe, that an
imposing mountain reservoir for drinking water was constructed
in 1950. It can hold up to 25 million liters of drinking
water, is 8.5 m deep and is today part of the Water Museum.
For decades, drinking water from springs and natural sources
located in Salzburg‘s surrounding communities has been
pumped to this mighty holding tank, before continuing on
its journey into the city itself: the broad network of pipes
extends 870 km - roughly the same distance as from Salzburg
to Copenhagen. The drinking water then pours from the taps
into Salzburg homes, clear, clean and fresh with no further
processing necessary.
OFFER
EVENT-TIP
Enjoy a special family day at museum Wasser-
Spiegel to celebrate Drinking Water Day (15 June).
