While the commanding villas and lavish overwater suites of the more feted destinations grab all the attention, multicultural Mauritius – encircled by a protected natural reef where white beaches and evergreen forests flank sugarcane and tea plantations – has been quietly making a few waves of its own. Another relative newcomer, this time on the island’s mountainous northwest coast, is Angsana Balaclava (angsana. com): a petite, adult-only resort with just 52 suites and villas that, like the St Regis, very much puts the emphasis on its culinary aptitude with a host of outlets purveying cuisines ranging from Thai and Malaysian to southern Indian and creole specialties.
