By Avril Groom The scene inside Paris’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs last July was like an emotional reunion. Christian Lacroix, one of the great talents of French fashion (who paradoxically no longer designs a commercial collection of his own) was receiving plaudits from friends and colleagues for designing the extraordinarily beautiful clothes displayed next to him – bright coats and matador jackets extravagantly beaded in black, billowing taffeta trousers and puffed-up peplums, boldly striped monochrome evening gowns and surreal fox fur hats shaped like cones or pompoms. Though the designs had all of Lacroix’s verve, they also echoed the long extinct work of Elsa Schiaparelli, a mould-breaking force in Paris couture during the 1930s, best known for her championing of shocking pink as a serious shade (lobster hats et al), and friend and collaborator of artists such as Dalí and Cocteau. Lacroix’s interpretations were the first clothes revealed in the long and muchanticipated rebirth of Schiaparelli, and although they were shown during CENTURION-Magazine.COM 65
