BLACKBOOK THE SMART

BLACKBOOK THE SMART GUIDE Melbourne’s Might The Victorian capital continues to raise the style stakes, reports CARRIE HUTCHINSON, who chronicles the latest openings across Australia’s fastest-growing city WHERE TO STAY Light and shadows cast by a kinetic sculpture designed by local artist Laura Woodward offer a subtle diversion from the stark beauty of the entrance to United Places Botanic Gardens (unitedplaces.com.au). There is no foyer at this luxe, 12-suite bolthole, the dream come to life of first-time hotelier Darren Rubenstein. Instead, guests use their private code to access the building, located in the upscale suburb of South Yarra. Half of the rooms overlook the lush Royal Botanic Gardens, while the others have views of heritage industrial buildings. Every detail, from Le Labo bathroom amenities to the forestgreen velvet drapes that cocoon the bedroom at the touch of a button, is carefully considered. Rubenstein, who worked with architects Carr Design Group and design studio Projects of Imagination to realise his vision, has focused on imbuing the hotel with a local touch. Open a golden ale from Melbourne brewery Two Birds or make yourself a tea in a beautiful ceramic cup created by Shari Lowndes then relax on the large terrace as the sun sets over the city. Another exclusive Melbourne hideaway is Microluxe (micro-luxe.com). Local architecture firm Studio Edwards, which specialises in small spaces, used characterful materials – marble, stone, concrete and steel – to define the different living areas in the petite space. If both Microluxe and United Places are fully booked, try St Kilda’s The Prince (theprince.com.au), whose 38 rooms were refreshed earlier this year by local firm Meme Design, introducing fresh gelato-inspired tones, locally crafted furniture and a vibe that hints at vintage Miami.
