L. A. RT MEET THE INNOVATORS AND IDEALISTS WHO ARE TURNING THE CALIFORNIAN CITY INTO A WORLD-CLASS CULTURAL CAPITAL BY ALIX BROWNE PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEFAN RUIZ Photographs by Luca Khouri Styled by Melissa Ventosa Martin When Ai Weiwei made his Los Angeles debut, it was, appropriately enough, something of a blockbuster event. The Chinese art star had no fewer than three major openings in the city within the space of a week this autumn, and the venues were particularly telling: he showed sculpture in Beverly Hills at UTA Artist Space (until 1 December; utaartistspace.com), which is owned by one of LA’s most powerful talent agencies (Ai is, naturally, a client of UTA’s recently minted fine arts division); he took over the ground floor of the Marciano Art Foundation (until 3 March; marcianoartfoundation.org), a contemporary art venue established by jeans-wear magnates Maurice and Paul Marciano; and he inaugurated art impresario Jeffrey Deitch’s new Hollywood outpost (until 5 January; deitch.com). These days it seems everything is being consumed as entertainment: fashion, culture, politics, news and, increasingly, art. CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM 69
