From the Editor

From the Editor CHRISTIAN SCHWALBACH It’s been 20 years since we began making Centurion Magazine for you. Over the decades our team has proved again and again how adept we are at staying ahead of trends, whether it’s travel or timepieces, gastronomy or gadgets. But today we find ourselves a little out of our depth: there are real uncertainties about how the world will look by the time you have this magazine in your hands. In most situations I see the glass as half full. Right now is no different: I’m incredibly inspired by the steps my friends, colleagues, supporters and acquaintances are taking in this fight against COVID-19. It’s testing our mettle – and we are rising to the challenge. American Express, for instance, has not only given million to combat this horrible virus, but has also paired with Hilton Hotels to offer free rooms for up to one million frontline medical professionals. I encourage you to take note of those who are giving that little bit extra at the moment – and to remember them as life starts to normalise again. Our mission has always been to offer you a glimpse of the newest, the best, the brightest and the timeless. We present it to you in this issue with an extra dose of optimism, coming by way of Rwanda, where we journey to see that the majestic gorillas and their lush natural habitat, 26 years after the country’s civil war, are just one part of a society-wide transformation. Elsewhere in the issue, we have scoured the options for our homes – where we’ve been spending so much time recently – to offer ideas for improvements, and we also showcase a selection of our favourite resorts: like everyone across the hospitality and restaurant industries, they will greatly appreciate support when restrictions are lifted. Finally, don’t miss our special section on yachts, which ventures inside the minds of some of the sea’s leading thinkers, including 39-year-old wunderkind Etienne Salomé, who previously designed the world’s fastest production car for Bugatti and has now moved on to create his own line of eye-catching watercraft. I hope you find inspiration in these pages. • Speckled Black Hundreds of tiny, artfully arranged crystal-glass spheres form the basis of this wallpaper, dubbed Caviar by its Berlin-based designer Ulrich Welter (welter-wandunikate.de).
