By Claire Wrathall Stretching 100 or so kilometres through the Alps in southeast Switzerland, the high-altitude Engadin valley used to trade principally on its reputation as the birthplace of winter sports. And not just skiing: this is the home of the Cresta Run, the White Turf horse races (on ice!) and the Snow Polo World Cup. Lately, however, its status as a magnet for art lovers has begun to supplant all that, and winter visitors more keen on stretching their minds than their hamstrings can now find plenty to divert themselves off-piste besides langlauf, snowshoeing and après-ski. It’s not hard to see why commercial art galleries – the likes of Karsten Greve and Vito Schnabel – might have decided to open branches in a place where the one per cent tend to congregate in winter.
