STATISTICS – WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE INDUSTRY AND THE MARKETS “We’re talking about smarter motorways, smarter factories, smarter cities, smarter homes. In a March 2018 report, O2 forecasts that 5G will earn the UK £6BN a year through productivity savings. “In the future, every person is likely to be surrounded by 1,000 sensors whether they are at home, in the office, in the car or even in the countryside. There will be sensors in the tractors, on the animals and the data will be collected continuously and processed and presented to the farmer. It all makes agriculture smarter”. SAVINGS FOR HOUSEHOLDS The O2 report forecasts that 5G will help households save up to £450 a year on energy, council tax and food bills. O2 says food waste will drop too with the introduction of smart fridges, and electric cars will slash fuel costs from 2025 when 5G will ensure energy grids can cope with large-scale charging of electric cars. SAVING ON PUBLIC SERVICES The analysis forecasts that councils will claw back £2.8BN annually through implementing technologies such as smart lights and connected bins. The report even says that 5G will free up 1.1MN GP hours in the NHS, because it will enable remote health services and monitoring via wearables. According to O2, further productivity savings will come from predictive maintenance on railways as well as reduced road congestion thanks to 5G-enabled traffic management and connected route planning apps. “By 2035, 5G will support the production of up to £8.5TN worth of goods and services.” Qualcomm “Most operators will not elect to charge a premium for consumer 5G services.” CCS Insight “In 2019 and 2020, cloud service providers and mobile operators will collaborate to put commercial clouds at the network edge. One of the big advantages of 5G is latency as low as 1.5 milliseconds. This presents an opportunity for mobile operators to market the efficiency and performance that characterises computing at the network edge.” CCS Insight 2018 PAGE 23
