GLOSSARY

GLOSSARY 5G - Fifth Generation wireless. This is the latest iteration of cellular wireless technology that has been engineered to increase speeds, capacity and responsiveness. VR - Virtual Reality. Defined as the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. With VR, a person is placed into a computer generated world, separate from the real world. AR - Augmented Reality. Overlaying digital information into a live environment. Mixed Reality - The merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualisations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. Low Latency - This means that the connection and response times to the network are very low (sometimes known as ‘lag’) resulting in improved experiences for streaming and issuing commands and instructions. Network Slicing - This is where Operators can provide portions of their networks for specific customer use cases, whether that use case is the smart home, the Internet of Things (IoT) factory, the connected car, or the smart energy grid. IoT - Internet of Things. This is the extension of Internet connectivity into physical devices and everyday objects such as sensors and cameras. Embedded with electronics, Internet connectivity, and other forms of hardware, these devices can communicate and interact with others over the Internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled. MiFi - MiFi or MiFi dongles are wireless devices that enable multiple users to share a single mobile broadband connection. Tether/Tethering - The linking of a computer or other devices to a smartphone in order to connect to the Internet.
