Munch began to paint at the age of just 12, following a childhood marked by tragedy. His mother died from tuberculosis when he was just five, and his older sister died from the same disease nine years later, resulting in his lifelong focus on themes of loss and vulnerability. Munch can be said to be almost as famous for his life as he is for his art. In periods, he lived a nomadic and turbulent bohemian life, together with the Kristiania Bohemians in the Norwegian capital of Oslo and with the group around the wine bar Zum schwarzen Ferkel in Berlin. During his long life as an artist, Munch experimented with the different painterly directions of his time, but it is first and foremost as a symbolist and expressionist that he has become famous. Paintings such as The Scream, Madonna, Death in the Sickroom and The Dance of Life are highly praised icons in art history. Munch lived a life devoted to art. His artistic oeuvre extends over a period of more than 60 years, during which he produced more than 1,000 paintings; 4,000 drawings; and 15,000 prints. More than half of his paintings and nearly all of his print reliefs are on display at the Munch Museum in Oslo, while Viking is the proud custodian of one of the largest private collections outside of the Norwegian capital, with 28 original Munch pieces on display on our ocean ships. Thanks to an exclusive partnership with the Munch Museum, Viking has also been granted the digital rights to the entire Munch catalog, and we are thrilled to be able to share Munch’s work with so many guests as they travel the rivers and oceans of the world.
