VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS PEOPLE and PLACES See the world through the eyes of the award-winning British photographer Alastair Miller in these striking images captured in Scandinavia Alastair Miller is an award-winning British photographer now based in Paris, France. After a brief career serving as a navigator in Britain’s Merchant Navy, he began his current career by photographing opera and classical music events and venues in London. He then spent more than a decade in Paris, photographing people and places for lifestyle magazines and newspapers, principally for British titles including The Times and The Sunday Times. Travel and nature are very close to his heart, and despite having moved on from his naval days, he recalls his first true passion has always been the sea. In his specially curated collection Norway: Colors and Textures, the rich and pristine details of the region are encapsulated on film in a way never before seen. “I always search for the unexpected, the small detail in the larger landscape—whether a drop of rain on glass or the light across a sandstone facade,” reflects Miller. It is this eye for the unusual, combined with a talent for capturing the hint of magic within a fleeting moment, that ensures Miller’s photographs have a timeless quality to them. Above: The ultimate explorers, the Vikings ventured far and wide to create new settlements and forge new trading routes. Yet the Vikings were most at home in the region we know as Scandinavia, bound by a strong sense of family and clan. Facing page: For thousands of years, glaciers—known as isbreer—have sculpted the Norwegian landscape. On these pristine slopes, meltwater accumulates and turns into rivers and waterfalls of the purest water. EXPLORE MORE VIKING.COM 39
