TRADE NEWS JENS OBERHEIDE: “EXPECTING MORE THAN THREE BILLION EUROS IN ORDERS AT IFA 2008” By Gary Smith Jens Oberheide, Publisher of trade magazine Media Seller and IFA Senior Counsellor believes that 2008 is a great year for IFA. “The fact is that mixing Brown and White Goods merely reflects the everyday reality that people experience at retail,” he said. “And bringing the reality of the trade situation here to IFA has proved to be a significant success in terms of the amount of orders placed. I expect that the final figure will be more than three billion euros.” There has been another rather less predictable result of the inclusion of Home Appliances: “Consumer electronics are very glamorous, inspirational and sparkling so the Home Appliances people have to work that much harder to get their message and the qualities of their products across,” Oberheide said. “They have to really demonstrate tangible benefits and consequently we are seeing a lot of things like cooking on stands which really adds something to the buzz and atmosphere in the exhibition halls for the public. And I’m happy to say that all our trade visitors are also quite happy about the situation and accept both product categories being here together.” Volker Müller, the CEO of buying group Expert, whose 6,000 member outlets in 15 countries turned over € 9.6 billion in 2007, sees further benefit for individual retailers coming from the digital sector: “It’s clear that as devices become ever more multifunctional that consumers ask more and more questions before buying, which means that dealers have to be better prepared and educated,” he said. “And we are seeing that this is working in favour of individual shops because they have a vested interest in being able to properly inform customers about their potential purchases. A lot of the people who work in chain-stores simply do not have the same level of motivation.” Volker Müller, the CEO of buying group Expert Jens Oberheide, Publisher of trade magazine Media Seller and IFA Senior Counsellor Despite his positive assessment of IFA’s first attempt to include Home Appliances, Oberheide does not see White and Brown Goods as being particularly natural partners: “Brown and White together is a marriage of convenience that was not born of any great affection for each other,” he said. “The two parties have tentatively come closer to each other, and now effectively live under one roof. They are starting to trust each other and the relevant groups, associations, tradesman and consumers are also apparently happy with the relationship.” IFA International • Monday, 1 st September 2008 www.ifa-international.org 33
