THE SMART GUIDE of new

THE SMART GUIDE of new openings set to make the country an even more desirable destination. Rome, in particular, is having a moment, with Soho House and The Hoxton both making their mark in the past year or so. Joining these hotels is the country’s first Six Senses (sixsenses. com) property. Housed in a restored 18th-century Unesco heritage building with interiors by Patricia Urquiola, there will be 96 rooms, a rooftop terrace and – as always – an emphasis on wellness, community and sustainable design. Also its debut Italian property, The Rome EDITION (editionhotels. com), with a central location just a few steps from Via Veneto and Bernini’s Tritone Fountain in Piazza Barberini, will provide all of the signature offerings the brand has become known for: 93 expertly appointed rooms and suites, a cosy Punch Room Bar with handcrafted cocktails and, of course, a rooftop terrace and pool, perfect for private parties. Meanwhile, with hotels already scattered across the globe, including in London, Paris, Bali and Dubai, the Bulgari (bulgarihotels.com) brand has finally come home, with its much-anticipated Rome opening. Occupying a modernist 1930s building, the property – like the others in the collection – has been outfitted by Italian architectural firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and will be layered with luxury details such as ochre travertine marble and burnt red brick that emphasise the link to Emperor Augustus’ ancient Rome. With hotels already in Venice, Rome, and Florence, Baglioni Hotels & Resorts (baglionihotels. com) continues its Italian expansion with its arrival in Milan. Located in the thriving Brera district, the property nods to the art and design of 1960s Milan and includes a modern Milanese restaurant helmed by Michelin-starred chef Claudio Sadler. Perched CITY SLICKERS From top: the façade of the Capella Sydney; a lounge at The Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York on the waterfront on Venice’s Murano Island, The Langham (langhamhotels.com), housed in the former 17th-century Casino Mocenigo, unfolds over 138 roomsand features the group’s signature Chuan Spa, which focuses on traditional Chinese medicine. It has been designed by Milan-based Matteo Thun & Partners to make the most of the historical building’s original frescoes and breathtaking views of the lagoon. Last, but not least, Capri’s Hotel La Palma (oetkercollection.com) – which since 1822 has been a social hub for a kaleidoscope of notable personalities from artists to poets – has emerged from a full facelift, courtesy of the Oetker Collection, to include a reduced room count, a rooftop restaurant and bar, as well as a newly built pool deck. QATAR CONTINUES Thanks to the football World Cup at the end of last year, Qatar has seen a rush of new openings including offerings from The Ned, Andaz, Raffles, and Fairmont in Doha. And this year, the city expands further with two much-anticipated launches. Set on the beachfront within The Pearl, a prestigious island community, the Four Seasons (fourseasons.com) offers residential style, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a private beach and seven restaurants and lounges, including one inspired by Joël Robuchon. The Rosewood Doha (rosewoodhotels.com), meanwhile, stands out for its home within striking twin towers that have a façade inspired by the coral reefs off the Persian Gulf Coast. Inside are 185 rooms and 173 serviced apartments – the latter for long-term stays with 300 more available for private purchase – alongside eight bars and restaurants and Asaya, a new Rosewood signature wellbeing concept.
