NOTES FROM SECTION NETJETS HEAD JULIAN RENTZSCH CREWMEMBERS IN PROFILE ALEXANDER ROSENZWEIG Captain, Embraer Phenom 300 MY FIRST EXPOSURE TO FLYING WAS … when my father paid for a short scenic fl ight in a Cessna 172 for my brother, himself and me during a local fl ight display at a small airfi eld in the north of Germany when I was about 10 years old. Consequently, I started fl ying gliders when I was 14, the minimum age to do so in Germany. THE BEST PART OF FLYING IS … that you leave most of your earthly worries behind and focus on one particular thing – operating a sophisticated jet as professionally as you can while being exposed to some of the most beautiful and unique vistas of this world. BEFORE JOINING THE NETJETS TEAM, I WAS … fl ying for various business jet operators in Germany after fi nishing a career in the German Navy’s submarine fl eet. THE ONE DAY AT NETJETS I WON’T FORGET WAS… the day I fi nished my fi rst tour as a commander on the Phenom 300. ONE THING OWNERS PROBABLY WOULDN’T GUESS ABOUT ME IS … that I was a submarine commander before my fl ying career – Uboot Kommandant, as is the only correct form of expressing the position I held. ON MY DAYS OFF … I go longboard-surfi ng, ride my Harley around the Andalucían countryside, walk my rescue dog and practise Zen, besides spending quality time with my Andalucían spouse. WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR I WOULD LIKE TO … consolidate my experience and skills as a captain on the Phenom 300. WITHIN THE NEXT 10 YEARS I WOULD LIKE TO … return to long-haul fl ying in NetJets or/and become involved in Crew Resource Management (training). MY BEST ADVICE FOR STAYING SANE ACROSS TIME ZONES … depends on what you want to achieve. If it is short term, try to stay in your home zone, sleep when it would be night at home. Otherwise stay with the rhythm of the new one. Force yourself to stay awake till it is nighttime there and then sleep. The same goes for returning home. Stay with the light-darkness cycle of the local time zone. MY PROUDEST MOMENT AS A CREW MEMBER WAS … related to an earlier question, as I now had gone full cycle and achieved the same in aviation as in the Navy, being the skipper of the “ship”. 36 NetJets
