REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT:

REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT: AMERICAS PREMIUM URUGUAYAN WINERY DEBUTS NEW ICON WINE AT VINEXPO Bodega Garzón’s founder Alejandro Bulgheroni and winemaker Alberto Antonini will debut their new icon wine – Balasto – at Vinexpo, so attendees can be the very first to sample this new wine. California Wine Exports Up 78% Over Past Decade US wine exports, 90% from California, reached US.62bn in winery revenues in 2016, a new record. Despite challenges from a strong dollar, winery revenues were up 1% from 2015. Volume was 412.7 million litres or 45.9 million cases. “California wine exports have grown 78% by value in the last decade despite heavilysubsidised foreign competitors and high tariffs. Our global trading partners are increasingly acknowledging the high quality of wine from the Golden State and responding to our California wines marketing efforts throughout Earl Hewlette Terressentia Corporation, owner/operator of the O.Z. Tyler Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, has begun expanding production capabilities at the plant. Terressentia Corporation was founded in 2007 with the idea that technology can radically improve both quality and taste of distilled spirits. The company specializes in contract production of distilled spirits for large retail chains, individual brand owners, and other distilleries or exporters. In 2014, the corporation purchased the 26-acre former Charles Medley Distillery in the world,” said Wine Institute Vice President International Marketing, Linsey Gallagher. The top 10 export markets for California wines are: the European Union’s 28-member countries, accounting for 5 million, followed by Canada, 1 million; Hong Kong, million; Japan, million; China, million; Mexico, million; South Korea, million; Switzerland, million; Singapore, million; and Philippines, million. Robert P. Koch, Wine Institute President and CEO, says California wine exports continue to reflect the trend toward “premiumisation” with the dollar value of wine sales outpacing volume shipments: “California wines are well positioned for this trend—our vintners are offering quality, value, diverse styles and environmental stewardship in their winemaking. Combined with the state’s iconic lifestyle, innovative cuisine and beautiful destinations, California wines continue to gain attention from consumers worldwide.” Hall 1, Stand DE189 TERRESSENTIA FURTHER EXPANDS NEW KENTUCKY DISTILLERY Owensboro, KY. The Distillery is now producing Bourbon and Rye Whiskey for the rapidly growing brown spirits markets and is filling barrels with O.Z. Tyler Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey that will be released in early 2018. Hall 3, Stand U320 Bodega Garzón is located near the southeastern coast of Uruguay, about 170 kilometres from the country’s capital, Montevideo, and only 18 km from the Atlantic Ocean, in a region that is emerging as a leader in the production of Uruguay’s signature varietal, Tannat. © Les Williams HOSPITALITY / RESTAURANTS / BARS WHERE TO GO IN Bordeaux CLUBS / EVENTS / SHOPPING / CULTURE The “Etchebest View” of Bordeaux The globally celebrated Chef, Philippe Etchebest, opened the restaurant “Le Quatrième Mur” in Bordeaux just under two years ago. We asked him what prompted him to open a new establishment here… Philippe Etchebest Chef I chose to settle in Bordeaux because it’s my hometown and I wanted to contribute to the vibrancy of the city. Le Quatrième Mur is a brasserie style restaurant set within the amazing heritage building that is the National Opera House, right in the middle of Bordeaux’s historic quarter. Through our menus and our cooking, we remain true to my principles of sharing and generosity. We offer uncomplicated dishes but in which flavour plays the leading role. Why name the restaurant Le Quatrième Mur? “Imagine a high wall standing along the edge of the stage separating you from the audience… act your part as though the curtain hasn’t been raised”. These were the words of Denis Diderot in “La poésie dramatique”. It was this quotation that the designer and architect used as inspiration for their concept for the restaurant. They then built a 27-metre long wall which separates the restaurant from the dramatic arts next door. Can you suggest a “must do” for those on their first visit to the city? Bordeaux is a beautiful city, which has enjoyed an extraordinary dynamism over the past few years. The city was voted best European destination in 2015 and listed as the number one city in the Lonely Planet guide 2017. For those who visit the city for the first time, I would suggest to simply “get lost” in the many streets of the city centre and admire the architecture. The most important thing is to take your time (something I have trouble to do THROUGH OUR MENUS AND OUR COOKING, WE REMAIN TRUE TO MY PRINCIPLES OF SHARING AND GENEROSITY myself) and enjoy. From the top of the Aquitaine bridge, the scenery of Bordeaux at sunset is amazing. Can you recommend an unusual place for the visitor to discover? I recommend the “Marché des Capucins” in the Saint Michel area. It is a market that dates from several centuries ago and symbolises tradition, authenticity and the very best products. It is a place of life, where one can discover and taste everything our beautiful region offers and more. It’s definitely a different side of this vibrant city and it reminds me so much of my childhood and my parents’ restaurants “Le Chipiron” and “Cour de l’Yser”.
