Multispectral Imager (MSI) Product LineQinetiQ North America has demonstrated MSIcapabilities on land and at sea. Flight testing of ourMSI sensors at multiple altitudes on manned andunmanned platforms have shown the utility of MSIto detect surface and near/subsurface objects in themaritime environment. As pictured in the images tothe right, spectrally-processed multispectral imagescan detect subsurface targets which may not bevisible to the naked eye in various sea states.QinetiQ North America participated in a side-bysidecomparison of electro-optical (EO), infrared(IR) and MSI sensors during flight tests over lanesof buried mines. These tests demonstrated that theMSI sensor was superior in detecting buried minesduring the day. In fact, as seen on the images to theright, buried mines do not show up in EO imageryand can barely be seen in IR. However, they can beclearly seen in MSI. The long time buried mines MSIimagery reveals mine rows buried over five yearsearlier in desert terrain.Multispectral imagery can find “hidden” objects thatare invisible in conventional EO imagery. The imagesto the right show a camouflaged object withinfoliage. The object is well hidden using conventionalcolor video but stands out dramatically when MSIcombines multiple bands to produce a pseudocolor image. The broad utility of the MSI cameratechnology is also demonstrated in the black andwhite conventional video of a camouflaged tentfrom an airborne platform. While the image is hardto make out when viewed through a conventionalvideo camera, it clearly displays in single band MSIas seen on the images to the right.EO(newly buried mines)MWIRMSIConventional Video Camera(long time buried mines)QPAS MSI (with no Spectral Processing)Connect where innovation lives.
