Teddy Bear Hospital<br />

Teddy Bear Hospital is one of EMSAs (European<br />

Medical Students’ Association) many project. Teddy<br />

Bear Hospital-TBH is a favorite among EMSAs because<br />

of its simplicity to start and the many benefits we are able<br />

to reap from it.<br />

In 2002 EMSA-Georgia has organized TBH with<br />

support of Tbilisi State Medical University. Since that<br />

time EMSA-Tbilisi, Medical faculty of Tbilisi State Medical<br />

University, together with Pediatrics is Organizing<br />

this project.<br />

Now In 2007, by decision of EMSA-Tbilisi<br />

TBH will be organized together with Student’s Selfgovernment<br />

and iv. Tarkhnishvili students’ Scientific<br />

Society Of Tbilisi State Medical University and<br />

pediatric<br />

Teddy Bear Hospital (TBH) aims at helping<br />

young children between ages of 3-12 to lose their<br />

fears towards doctors and hospital environments in<br />

a friendly and playful way.<br />

Children are invited to attend a teddy bear<br />

hospital with their ‘poorly’ teddy bear. In the teddy<br />

bear hospital, there are teddy doctors (medical students)<br />

with their stethoscopes, sphygmomanometer, ‘x-ray’ and<br />

‘CAT scan’ machines to investigate teddy’s illness.<br />

In this simple role-play where children act as teddy’s<br />

parents and medical students as teddy doctors, children<br />

learn to understand the entire process of a consultation<br />

without the pressure of being a patient. We often fear<br />

what we do not understand, therefore, using this roleplay,<br />

children will then understand it better and learn to<br />

cope better as they would already know why such<br />

investigation has to be done. We often do better when we<br />

feel we are in charge. In this instance, children make the<br />

choice to come to Teddy Bear Hospital with their teddy<br />

bear – therefore they feel they are in-charge of the situation.<br />

When children first come into Teddy Bear Hospital,<br />

they are sat down in groups to break the ice. Simple<br />

introductions followed by the ‘talk of fear’. ‘Talk of fear’<br />

when going to the doctor’s surgery or the hospital in<br />

accor<strong>da</strong>nce. Using systemic desensitization of coping<br />

with fears, we first talk to them about it, see some<br />

pictures of it, then get them to picture it in their mind,<br />

then picture themselves in it, touch the real thing (e.g.<br />

syringe – without the needle of course) and slowly<br />

cope with it.<br />

After that, we then bring them to the consultation<br />

room with teddy pretending to be ‘ill’. We get a history<br />

off teddy and the children. Perform some clinical<br />

examinations – inspection, palpation, percussion,<br />

auscultation. Children love this as they will get some<br />

‘hands-on’ experience meddling with stethoscope –<br />

listening to their heart beat and breathing sounds.<br />

Blood pressure and temperature will also be taken.<br />

Teddy with broken arms or legs will also get their ‘xray’<br />

taken. Some teddy will also get to see their very<br />

own ‘CAT scans’. With teddy needing an emergency<br />

surgery, there will be surgeon available to operate on<br />

teddy. Children are also taught the reality of medicine,<br />

not everyone gets better on the <strong>da</strong>y, some might have<br />

to stay overnight and tackle the hospitalization issue.<br />

Telling them that the hospital building is not scary and<br />

that someone could stay with them. Children often<br />

think staying in the hospital is a punishment for them<br />

for being naughty. A consultation is usually ended with<br />

a prescription for teddy and reminder about taking<br />

their medication regularly and some hygiene issues.<br />

After understanding the role of the doctor and<br />

the patient, children will then pretend to be doctors<br />

and treat medical students with their new found skills.<br />

The miniature ‘ER’ (emergency room) sessions’ will<br />

often be the best part. Children and medical students<br />

will play the role as emergency room doctor’s on-call,<br />

while some will play paramedics. After receiving an<br />

emergency call, the team will be sent to the scene to<br />

save the patient (sometimes a teddy, sometimes a<br />

child or even a medical student). Children will then<br />

learn to practice CPR – cardiac pulmonary<br />

resuscitation.<br />

Children are also taught about personal hygiene,<br />

common childhood illnesses and simple body<br />

anatomy.<br />

Teddy Bear Hospital shows a child that doctors<br />

are no scary white monsters and hospital is not really<br />

a scary place. Medical students are given teachings<br />

and lectures prior to dealing with children. This will<br />

also help to bridge the gap between medical students –<br />

the future doctors with children and the community.
