From 1948 selection of most vegetablewas carried out. From 1957 at Vytėnai experimental station there was started cucumber,onion, cabbage, tomato, carrot, red beet, radish, cauliflower, beans and garden pea selection.In 1961 vegetable selection in green houses began. In 1968, when Vytėnai experimental stationwas transferred to Babtai, selection work was carried on. In selection work for the creation ofnew cultivars and hybrids there are applied methods, which quicken selection process, polyploidization,hybridization, various ways of selection.The result of all the selection work – more than 60 cultivars of garden plants, and from1987 there was created 43 garden plant cultivars and hybrids. In 2003–2007 there were carriedout investigations in Poland; their result – including of cultivars into catalogue of EuropeanUnion vegetable species cultivars. In 2008 there are written 23 vegetable cultivars and hybridsin the National plant cultivar list and EU vegetable species general catalogue. Presently thereare carried out (IVS) investigations of 9 new vegetable cultivars and hybrids in Poland.In the collection of rare vegetable and spice plants there is grown more than 60 species.There are investigated the technologies of their growing and propagation, selected plants suitablefor growing in Lithuania, propagated their seed.Key words: vegetable, hybrids, selection, cultivars.177
