Model United Nations voor tto5

Dit jaar doen alle tto-leerlingen uit vwo5 mee aan de Model United Nations (MUN). Tijdens het vak
Global Studies wordt iedereen grondig voorbereid. Daarna volgt de praktijk van deze (internationale)
ervaring: lobbyen, debatteren, onderzoeken en veel interessante contacten op doen. Tijdens een MUN
conferentie spelen leerlingen vanuit de hele wereld de Verenigde Naties na. Als vertegenwoordiger
van een land debatteren ze in formele stijl over hedendaagse wereldproblematiek. Dit is de 4 e keer dat
de RLS meedoet aan een MUN conferentie. Het is de eerste keer dat we deelnemen aan een
conferentie in het buitenland!
De week voor de voorjaarsvakantie is een groep van 11 leerlingen afgereisd naar Washington DC voor
de North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN). In maart deed een groep in
Ankara mee aan de Bilkent Laboratory and International School MUN. In Leiden werd in mei ook
deelgenomen aan een MUN.

The 14th of February was the day that we,
11 TTO 5 students and 2 teachers
departed for Washington DC, United
States of America. It was, as promised by
our accompanying teachers, a life
changing experience with a lot of fun and
beautiful memories to bring back home
and share with our family and friends. The
adventure started when we all gathered at
Schiphol that very morning. Everyone
was extremely excited and looking
forward to our departure. After the eight
hour flight, we finally arrived in the
United States. The moment you get out of
the plane and set foot on American soil is
an amazing feeling.
First, we went to the hotel to check in,
drop of our luggage and have some downtime,
as Mr. Torgersen called it. After we had had some time for ourselves, we went out of the hotel to
look for a good place to eat. We ended up in a nice Mexican restaurant, with great tortillas and very
tasty burritos. After an enjoyable dinner we went back to the hotel, because everyone was pretty tired.
A lot of us were happy that there was a great wireless network connection in the lobby, so we could
email our parents and talk to our friends back home.
The next day we went sight seeing. This was really amazing, because one moment we were walking
between all kinds of buildings and the next we were standing in a park looking at The White House.
Yes, the White House is located in the middle of the city. After we saw the White House, we visited
the Washington Monument and the National Mall. This is a square with all kinds of museums. First,
we visited the Capitol; this is the tallest building in the whole city of Washington DC. No building
may be taller than this, because lady Freedom is on top of the dome and nothing may overpower
freedom.
