Reiswijzer – Studiereis Chakra
I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief
Voorwoord
Beste Chakra-mensen!
even gemakkelijk.
email bereiken of even langskomen in onze kamer.
“Software publishing, consultancy and supply”, “Manufacture of office, accounting and
computing machinery”, “Data processing”, “Higher Education” en “Motion picture and
video production and distribution” zijn hierin nader onderzocht.
I/O Vivat
Reisbeschrijving
Tijdens de reis doen we van alles. We verblijven in hotels, we doen bedrijfsbezoeken en
zo voort. Hierbij horen allerlei verantwoordelijkheden. We hoeven natuurlijk niet alles uit
te leggen. Over het algemeen geldt:
Luister braaf naar wat de commissie te vertellen heeft;
Wees altijd op tijd;
Let een beetje op wat je doet en wat anderen doen;
Ga nooit alleen op stap;
Wees lief en zeur niet;
moeten gedragen.
in Appendix B.
Richtlijnen bedrijfsbezoeken
Tijdens de bedrijfsbezoeken willen we natuurlijk representatief overkomen. Daarom is
Uiteraard gaan we allemaal netjes geschoren,
9
Reiswijzer – Studiereis Chakra
I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief
Verantwoordelijkheden dagvoorzitters
Hiervoor is gekozen omdat
jullie onderling verdelen.);
onderling verdelen.);
voor het bedrijf hebben voorbereid;
bedrijven;
vinden in Appendix H.
Verantwoordelijkheden dagverslag
principe gebruikt. Het principe werkt als volgt:
Iedere deelnemer leert uit zijn hoofd wie zijn buddies zijn;
Op een geschikt moment roept iemand van de commissie: “buddycheck!”;
Iedereen kijkt of zijn buddies aanwezig zijn;
Als er een buddy ontbreekt wordt dat even aan de commissie verteld;
We weten snel of iedereen aanwezig is.
We houden
ons dan aan het volgende reisschema:
13:27 Enschede (spoor 4, Intercity 1648 NS)
13:36 Hengelo
13:48 Almelo
14:14 Deventer
14:59 Amersfoort
15:28 Duivendrecht
15:34 Amsterdam Zuid WTC
15:41 Schiphol (spoor 6)
New Delhi is ruim,
Ongeveer 11 kilometer buiten Jaipur is
DHL: Circa 10 tot 12 US$ per kilo.
EMS: Circa 6 tot 7 US$ per kilo.
Tips & Tricks
Over India
roepie. 100 Rupee is ongeveer 1,75 € of andersom: 1 € is ca 55 Rp.
In
18
Reiswijzer – Studiereis Chakra
I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief
Drink alleen water uit flessen en controleer de verzegeling;
Pas op met rauw voedsel, zoals salades;
Neem maatregelen tegen muggen;
Kijk vooral de eerste dagen heel erg uit met het eten;
Bedelen is, volgens mij, officieel verboden in India.
Tips Wijnand Heijnen
“Praktische tips India:
Koop even een Airtel of Hutch kaart. Kun
je overal doen, zoals op het vliegveld;
plaatsen (waaronder Yamaha) hebben geen toiletpapier e.d.;
gebruik;
Altijd je handen wassen voor je gaat eten. Je handen zijn binnen een paar uur vies;
IIT Delhi (Department of CS & Engineering) (Bart Wassink)
The International Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the seven
IIT’s in India, was founded in 1961 as a college and got the status
of IIT in 1963. The IITD positions itself as innovative and
progressive and aims to be among the best technology institutes
of the world. Within the institutes policy is an emphasis on the
collaboration with both academia and industry. The IITD employees 442 faculty and
1,673 staff members. It hosts 3,751 under- and post-graduate students and 940 PhD.
students. Asiaweek ranked IITD as the 4 th best science and technology institute in Asia in
1999/2000, after a research among 45 institutes.
Computer science and engineering is one the 14 departments within IITD and was
formed in 1982, while IITD was active in this area since the early ‘70s. It employees 18
faculty members and hosts about 350 students. The department provides Bachelor, dual
degree, Master of Technology and PhD programs. The undergraduate students form the
largest group (around 200) and the PhD. students the smallest (around 30). In total
there are 124 different courses, in the whole range of subjects within informatics.
Admission to the programs is highly competitive; from the 180,000 applicants for
bachelor or dual degree CS programs only the best 300 are offered admission.
The emphasis in the curricula is on system architecture, algorithms, networking,
performance issues, and tools for applications development. The stress is more on
design, methodology, analysis, and good software practices. As part of graduation
requirements, each undergraduate student is expected to complete a two-semester
project. For the dual degree and Master of Technology programme, the students are
expected to undertake a project which has significant research component. The
collaboration with industry was created through participation of IBM and IRL researchers
Techonology (IIT). It officially started in 1999 with the first batch of Master’s students.
Plans for starting KReSIT were formed in 1996 when a lack of people with leadership and
vision in the IT task force became apparent. Its missions as stated by KReSIT are:
To innovate and to develop concepts and cutting-edge technology in KReSIT’s
chosen areas of research;
To transfer technology and spur the growth of a product industry in India;
To prepare technology experts and visionaries of tomorrow through quality postgraduate
education.
KReSIT focuses on academic programs, distance learning, research and business
incubation. Admissions to the academic programs require high GATE test scores and
passage of an entrance test, besides the usual demand of having a BSc degree. Research
areas include the internet, e-commerce, databases, IS and embedded systems. Future
research fields in large systems, financial solutions and IT management are planned.
Business incubation aims at fostering a healthy environment for Indian start-ups and at
Bollywood (Bob Koehoorn)
Bollywood is the name given to the movie industry located in Mumbai, being a blending
of Bombay (the earlier name for Mumbai) and Hollywood; the name even has its own
entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. Bollywood is regarded as Hindi cinema, even
though the language of the films is actually Hindustani, a blend of Hindi and Urdu. Songs
often use Urdu vocabulary, and feature dialogues are often filled with English words and
phrases, even whole sentences. Indian commercial movies are mainly musicals which
usually tell timeless moralistic stories, where traditions play an important role. The
goodness of the poor people, loyalty to the family, chastity and religions are some
prominent examples of this. Almost every movie stresses the religious harmony that is a
major aspect in Indian society. Most of the music is first recorded and then lip synched
by the actors.
The output of the Indian film industry is considered to be the largest in the world in
terms of number of films produced and number of tickets sold. In the year 2002 alone
there were 1200 movies released in India. Bollywood is the largest of the Indian regional
cinemas and attracts those who have proved themselves in the smaller industries. See
Figure 1 for a comparison between Hollywood and Bollywood figures. Bollywood budgets
are usually modest by Hollywood standards. There are few large studios and until
recently, Indian banks were forbidden to lend money to film productions. Thus funding
often comes from private distributors, and sometimes from illegitimate sources. In the
past, most Bollywood films could make money; now fewer do so. Amongst others, piracy
threatens the market. Balanced against this are the increasing returns from theatres in
Western countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and the USA. As more Indians
migrate to these countries, they form a growing market for upscale Indian films. 'Foreign'
audiences – in Asian and Western countries – are also growing, if more slowly. An
upcoming opportunity is that India can very well act as a hub for post production of films
made in foreign countries.
AMD’s focus is beyond integrated circuits and transistors. AMD is committed to helping
customers take advantage of the phenomenal capacity of silicon and help differentiate
their offerings. AMD’s products are always developed with the customers demands in
mind, and not just for the sake of innovation alone. This philosophy is called customercentric
innovation as depicted in the figure on the right. This is the guiding principle
behind everything done at AMD.
During 2004 sales went up to an all-time high of US$ 5.0 billion, which is an 42 percent
increase compared to 2003. The net income was US$ 91.5 million, compared to a net
loss of US$ 274 million in 2003. (Intel’s sales also went up to an all-time high of US$
34.2, a 13.5 percent increase compared to 2003.) During 2004 both the microprocessor
and the flash memory businesses were profitable; microprocessor business increased
with 29 percent and flash memory business increased with 65 percent.
On the 22 th of April 2004 AMD announced the opening of an engineering design centre in
experienced chip engineers will be employed. The new centre helps defining the future
microprocessor designs focused on meeting the evolving needs in India and other highgrowth
markets.
“We are expanding engineering operations at all of our design locations.”, said Randy
Allen, vice president of engineering for AMD’s Computation Products Group. “The
combination of outstanding engineering talent and cost advantages make
Bangalore an optimal place to locate a new design facility. We are working to bring the
centre online and up-to-speed quickly, and expect that our India engineering team will
work in conjunction with our U.S. teams to produce future generations of AMD
microprocessors that deliver real-world benefits to our customers and end-users.” (AMD,
Thoughtworks
ThoughtWorks is a US company founded in 1993 and focuses on application development
and systems integration services. It operates worldwide with offices in the US, Canada,
the UK, Australia and India. Its India office launched in 2001 and currently employs over
90 people. ThoughtWorks has knowledge in challenging and transforming fields like agile
(and distributed) development and offshore outsourcing.
Despite the economic and technological slowdown the last two years ThoughtWorks
managed to grow by almost 30 percent and its revenues were approximately $50 million
according to Gartner. Gartner indicates three key strategies to be part of this success:
focus on complex mission-critical applications, instead of being all things to all
clients
involvement with the open-source movement, so that clients can become
familiarised with the company by forehand
Appendix H - Micro-opdracht
Research question
a) What are the current and future opportunities and threats of the organization for
cooperation in international context, focused on the Netherlands and India,
concerning ICT
b) What can be learned from comparing these findings with findings in other visits
and with results of the macro & meso studies
Contents
The micro report should contain the following chapters:
1. Introduction
2. Organization description
3. International cooperation and ICT
3.1. Current state of international cooperation and ICT
3.2. Future of international cooperation and ICT
4. Macro & meso aspects
5. Comparison with preliminary report and other visits
6. Conclusion
7. References
A guideline for the contents of the different chapters can be found on the next pages of
this micro assignment.
Note that the use of the micro template, which can be downloaded from the Chakra
website, is obligatory. This is for your and our convenience.
Output
A paper in English that is suitable to be included in the final report. Report size: 9 pages
(photographs and illustrations excluded). Don’t forget it’s obligatory to use the micro
template!
Context
This part of the research equals 2 EC per participant. Together with the study tour itself,
the total compensation is 5 EC of the course International Study Tour Project (code
188085). (Participants who wish to use the study tour as a component of the minor
International Exploration are required to write additionally a paper with reflections,
leading to 1 EC extra.)
Planning
Before the study tour:
In groups of two, two companies will be assigned to you. Write a description of ‘your’
companies of about ½ A4. Notice that in some visits a division or small part of a bigger
organization is visited! The description will be used for the travel guide.
Prepare interview questions that will provide you with the information necessary to write
your micro report. Pay special attention to (the aspects mentioned in the guidelines of)
chapters 3 and 4. Deliver the results before the 28 th of January, 9:00.
The company visit:
On our way to the company visit, you have to do a presentation to inform your fellow
Chakra travelers about the company. This can be based on the description written before
the tour. During the visit, you have to do a presentation for the company visited, about
the study tour and the UT. Furthermore, during the visit, you are responsible for
collecting the information needed to write the final report.
38
Reiswijzer – Studiereis Chakra
I.C.T.S.V. Inter-Actief
Note that you need information from all organizations visited (especially competitors of
‘your’companies) for the comparison and the conclusions (Ch. 5 and 6) so you need to
collect information during all company visits!
After the study tour:
Deliver the final report before the 13 th of April.
Guidelines for the report
Chapter 1 - Introduction
Give a short description about the organization. No introduction about the study tour
itself or the macro/meso/micro assignment. Also pay attention here to the following
