4.10 DELIVERY
These are no postal deliveries on Sundays and announcements are made well in advance
about deliveries on public holidays.
LETTERS
Letters are delivered once on each weekday. Addressees may be requested to call for Bulk
Bags, Direct Agents Bags and large packets sent at printed papers rate of postage, the
weight and quantity of which would delay the distribution of first class correspondence.
PARCELS
Most ordinary parcels are delivered to the addressee’s premises, but certain parcels must be
collected from Hongkong Post by the addressee. These include :-
(a) Parcels for addressees on the outlying islands,
(b) Insured parcels,
(c) Parcels on which charges have to be paid,
(d) Parcels which have been unsuccessfully tendered for delivery,
(e) Parcels which have been received in a damaged condition.
A written notification of the arrival of any such parcel is sent to the addressee, who is
requested to collect the parcel from a specified post office.
Any parcel remaining unclaimed at the expiry of 7 working days from the posting of a
notification of arrival shall be liable to demurrage charge of $2 for each day that it remains
unclaimed after the expiration of that period, with a minimum charge of $16. If parcels from
overseas are not collected within two months from the posting of a notification of arrival, it
may be returned to the sender or otherwise disposed of as the Postmaster General thinks fit.
Local parcels remaining uncollected for 14 days after the date of a notification of arrival will
be returned to the sender. An unclaimed parcel bearing an alternative address provided by
the sender will after the expiry of 20 days be offered for delivery to the alternative address,
demurrage charges raised against the first addressee will be cancelled and the parcel
treated as new arrival. A receipt will be given for charges collected.
A parcel addressed care of any post office in Hong Kong or Poste Restante will be retained
for a period of two months before being treated as undeliverable or abandoned. Such a
parcel will be subject to demurrage charges as indicated above. If, however, during the
period of retention at a post office the contents of a parcel become, or are likely to become,
worthless through natural decay, or are found to be offensive or injurious, they are liable to
be disposed of forthwith.
