HIKING TRAILS
WITSAND
Hiking. Choose from different hiking routes, ranging from 12km
to 22km. Walk through grain lands, sheep paddocks and
ostrich breeding camps – then continue along the cliffs of the
Slang River and enjoy the spectacular views.
* Breede River Mouth Walk meanders along the sandspit on
the river’s eastern bank. At low tide the walk follows the river’s
edge and the sea, but at high tide the route is across soft
sand and dunes.
* Moodies Well Walk follows the sandy eastern sweep of San
Sebastian Bay for 4km to a well dug by a Scotsman in the
19th century to store water on camping and fishing trips. The
walk should be done at low tide.
* Whale Walk: Join the team from PiliPili Adventure Centre
for a unique whale hike experience that only annually from
June to November to accommodate the whale season. Lisa
will take you on a stand up paddle tour across the mouth of
the famous Breede River where you’ll leave your boards and
hike a short 5km to the lookout point at Infanta. Incredible
land-based viewing with Southern Right Whales right below
you. They come into the bay annually to feed and calve!
Experience first hand why Witsand is known as the Whale
Nursery of South Africa. The Fynbos you will encounter on
your hike is also worth mentioning. It is incredibly spectacular
during the months of August and September. The trip takes
about four hours with refreshments provided as well as a light
brunch upon return. For those who prefer to be taken across
by boat this can also be arranged.
