HISTORIC ROUTE

Heidelberg and its surroundings have a rich heritage of old

buildings and many of them have been preserved. The old

houses were built with raw clay bricks. The houses have high

ceilings, attics for storage and to keep the houses cool.

Traditionally, the windows were small for the same reason.

A historic walk through our town gives visitors, interested in history

and architecture, an experience to remember.

1: The Route starts in Van Riebeeck Street 35a at the Old

Congregational Church. The church was built by a German

family after the congregation in Suurbraak decided that

Heidelberg needed its own church. The church was

inaugurated on 11 May 1859.

2: Roxton House (Van Riebeeck Street 35) was built in the original

Victorian style and has been beautifully restored. This house is

the old rectory of the Congregational Church.

3: The Heidelberg town hall was inaugurated in 1913.

4: The stone post office building dates back to 1936. The building

is frequently photographed by tourists because of the similar

post office in Heidelberg, Germany.

5: The Heidelberg Hotel is a well-known landmark in Heidelberg.

The date on the building is 1932, the year the hotel was re

stored in art deco style.

GEMS OF OUR HISTORY

A blast from the past and a sense of absolute belonging comes

over you when you visit the gems of history in the Hessequa

region. Without a past there is no future and the heritage of

Hessequa tells a story to visitors of where they come from and it

lets them experience their own heritage. This shared history shows

us what we have in common and it unite us all.

This heritage embraces nature as well as man and it ranges from

the Cape Floral Region World Heritage Site with floristic hotspots in

various parts of Hessequa to the early human artifacts excavated

from the Blombos Cave near Stilbaai.

The region’s rich fauna and flora showcases its unique natural

beauty, which is still pretty much unknown to many outside of

the region, with mountain Fynbos, renosterveld and indigenous

forests. Early indigenous people lived here and they were proud

of this region. It is no wonder that the word Hessequa means

“people of the trees.”

Part of this heritage includes the coastal region of Stilbaai which

is home to the Blombos Cave and ancient fish traps and shell

middens along the coast from the Gourits River mouth to the

mouth of the Breede River. It also embraces the rock art sites

in the Langeberg mountains, the archaeological treasures of

the Blombos Cave, the many archaeological artefacts found

in the region, many other sites of archaeological and cultural

interest, as well as the unique limestone Fynbos of the area and

specifically in the Hessequa region.

THE BLOMBOS MUSEUM OF ARCHAELOGY

The Blombos Museum of Archaeology displays artifacts that has

bifacial points (Stilbaai points), bone tools, little freshwater shells

which were used as beads, a replica of the famous engraved

ochre and a replica of a 100 000-year-old paint workshop found

in the Cave.

Other displays include Early, Middle and Later Stone Age

artefacts, originating from the region. In addition, there is also

a section displaying examples of Bushman hunting and cultural

artefacts and a Khoekhoen clay pot.

The Blombos site is included in the newly formed route of the

Cradle of Human Culture which stretches from the West Coast to

the Mossel Bay region, including the Pinnacle Point Caves.

The only tamed eels in South Africa can be found at the

Palinggat Homestead in Stilbaai. These freshwater eels belong

to the Anquilla genus of the family Anquillidae. The eels in the

Palinggat Fountain have been living there for the past 125 years.

These eels move to a specific area in the ocean to mate and

spawn. The larvae are carried to the mainland of Africa by

ocean currents.

The only place in South Africa where tame eels are fed daily

The environment at the Palinggat Fountain seems to be ideal for

the eels. Nowhere else in the country are so many eels

concentrated in one secluded environment. They are pampered

and cherished by the staff of the tourism bureau and are handfed

daily on chicken livers. The feeding sessions are open for

viewing by the public.

JULIUS GORDON AFRICANA CENTRE

The internationally recognised Julius Gordon Africana Centre

(Versfeld House) in Riversdale was built in 1880. It houses the

largest collection of Thomas Bowler paintings in South Africa. Also

included in the permanent exhibition are works by Jan Volschenk

and Johannes Meintjes (both natives of Riversdale), Irma Stern,

Maggie Loubser, Gregoire Boonzaaier, Erich Mayer, Terence

McCaw, Ruth Prowse and Pieter Wenning.

Alongside the works of these famous South African artists you can

also experience Khoisan rock paintings and stone implements,

Africana furniture of the region and the history of Riversdale.

A region with a wealth of cultural heritage and a number of

historical landmarks ensure that visitors leave Hessequa with a

renewed sense of pride in the region’s heritage as well as in their

own history.

4X4 ROUTES

WITSAND

Ostrich Eco 4x4 Trail

The self drive Ostrich Eco 4x4 Trail is located near the popular

holiday town of Witsand. The route is 13km, difficulty grading of

one to three and it takes between three and five hours to

complete.

You will encounter a number of river crossings along the route

which can prove challenging, These are generally during very

wet winters. The pools left from these rains provide a fabulous

driving experience as you twist and turn through the kloofs.

A low range vehicle is required in some of the sections. Bring a

picnic lunch as there is an awesome spot under a giant Milkwood

tree where you can nibble on some treats.

This is a great trail for the whole family and is both a learning

and fun experience. This is a circular route and there are escape

routes at certain points along the route. Tel: +27 (0)82 687 7711

HEIDELBERG/RIVERSDALE: GYSMANSHOEK PASS

The Gysmanshoek Pass follows a historical ox wagon route dating

back to the mid 1700’s. This is an old gravel pass through a

natural cleft in the Langeberg Mountains between Heidelberg in

the south and the Little Karoo/ Ladismith area in the north. It is

driveable in a normal car in good weather, but after a good rain,

a 4x4 will be a better option.

Depending on the weather, things can get tricky on this pass.

Not too many people have travelled this delightfully scenic and

off the beaten track pass. It was originally named Hudson’s Pass

after the local magistrate. Take your time over this pass and stop

frequently to enjoy the proteas, ericas and other flowering Fynbos

species. See if you can find the ruins of the old English fort which

dates back to the Anglo Boer war.

The pass is 11,6km long and contains 51 bends, corners and

curves. The average gradient is a mild 1:36 but there are two very

steep sections close to the summit, where the gradient gets as

steep as 1:5 and FWD cars might well experience traction issues

here (especially if driving from south to north) - even in dry

weather.

GETTING THERE: FROM HEIDELBERG

From the south it is much quicker and simpler. From Heidelberg,

drive east along Van Riebeeck Street and just after crossing the

Duiwenhoksrivier, take the first turn left. This is a tarred road, which

becomes gravel later. Head north for 7km until you arrive at a fork

at GPS S34.032989 E20.957071. Keep right at the fork and drive for

15km to arrive at the southern start of Gysmanshoek Pass.

FROM RIVERSDALE (R323)

You will be approaching Gysmanshoek from the east. From

Riversdale drive on the tarred R323 north west for 3,2km. Take the

gravel road to the left at GPS S34.068246 E21.240291. Drive north

west for 25km to arrive at the southern start of Gysmanshoek Pass.

As altitude is gained the views become increasingly impressive to

the left as the farms and valleys look almost toy like in the

distance. Most of the bends are easy up until this point, but at the

4,3km mark, the road curves to the right through 160 degrees. The

radius of this bend is not very sharp and no reduction in speed

is necessary, but the condition of the track can become quite

rough here, so choose your driving lines with care. The presence

of lots of fist sized stones can cause traction issues for non 4WD

vehicles.

If you’re not in a 4x4, you will need to maintain some momentum

to get up this final part of the ascent, which lasts for 400m. The

summit point comes up quickly. The road is reasonably wide at

the summit and a two spoor track leads off to the right, where

you can park if you want to stop a while and enjoy the views or

take photos.

11

STILBAAI TO JONGENSFONTEIN: 4X4 SAND ROUTE EDEN PARK

How to get to Eden Park 4×4: About nine kilometres from Stilbaai

(one kilometres before Jongensfontein) take the gravel road to

the right (away from the ocean and Jongensfontein’s first houses)

and follow the indicators for about two kilometres to Eden Park.

This route consists of a scenic loop that is not too difficult,

depending on the driver’s level of experience as well as the

vehicle’s capabilities. A‘speelgat’ where various climbs out of

the sandy ‘bowl’ not only test the skills of the drivers and the 4×4

performance of the vehicles, but it is also great fun. All you need

is a 4×4 vehicle with hi and low Range.

Remember to deflate the vehicle’s tyres to about 1Bar (or even

less). There is a pump so that you can inflate the tyres again

before leaving the farm.

Follow the route by following the arrows. Keep an eye open for

tortoises, buck and other animals – we saw a few very interesting

tracks… like always when doing 4×4: ‘Tread Lightly’.

Buy the permit in the ‘self-help’ office and start the fun.

The Eden Park 4×4 Sand Route is an enjoyable experience for the

whole family. Tel: +27(0)72 155 4257

ALBERTINIA: CANCA FYNBOS 4X4 ROUTE (R325)

Canca Fynbos route is 17km long, with a route grading two to

three. It takes about two to three hours to drive, picnic spot along

the route. Tel: +27(0)28 745 333 or +27(0)79 883 0666

offers a wide variety of water sport as well as fishing. Watch

out for the beehives and take care not to annoy the bees. Best

to wear good walking shoes, a hat as well as sunblock and of

course your camera, water bottle and snacks.

Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve: birding, photography, hiking and

whale watching

No serious hiker or nature lover should miss this route!

Conservation area that boasts fairly difficult, but wonderfully

scenic and rewarding hiking trails (3km – 6km) between the

harbour and ancient fish traps. Three different vantage points

to start your hike: at the fish traps, Morris Point and at the whale

watching area. The routes vary from one to three hours.

On the walks you will see the indigenous milkwood tree forests

as well as the odd grysbok, bushbuck, mongoose and otter as

well as various species of birds and stunning views of the Indian

ocean.

The various trails criss-cross the entire reserve following the

contours of the dunes. It is clearly marked with sign boards such

as Elephant Bush Trail (Olifantbospad) and Brown Hyena Trail

(Strandjutpad). Have no fear, though, there are no elephants, nor

hyenas around anymore!

One of the routes takes you along the beach and is about 1.5

km. A lovely wide stretch of sand with rocks and lots of shells.

This is the most significant stretch of indigenous afromontane

forest left in the south-western Cape, with nearly all of the

35 typical forest tree species, including red alder, ironwood,

stinkwood and yellowwood. Visitors to this beautiful reserve will

relish the

opportunity to get out into the forest on day walks and mountain

biking trails. This is an excellent birding destination with more than

196 bird species regularly spotted. Hikers are likely to bump into

bushbuck and spot baboons and smaller mammals when out on

the trails. Sighting the forest emperor butterfly and a subspecies of

the rare ghost frog would be the highlight of a visit here, as they

can only be found in this particular forest.

Albertinia

Cape Aloe is indigenous to the area. This hardy African plant

has been used for many thouands of years to treat a

myriad ailments - from scratches and burns to sun protection

and purgative medication. Evidence of these healing

properties have been found in ancient Roman, Greek and

Egyptian archives. Another indigenous plant to the Albertinia

district is Thamnochortus insignis, commonly known as thatch.

The Whispering Tree

The “Whispering Tree” as it has been dubbed is, also one of the

ten thickest trees in SA. This makes it a must see and experience in

Albertinia. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF)

initiated a project to identify and protect trees worthy of special

protection throughout South Africa. Such projects have been

established in several countries, but this is the first of its kind in

Africa.

its pristine natural beauty, Gouritsmond is the perfect coastal

hideaway from the world. With the beach and river mouth

forming the focal point of the town, it’s a great spot to indulge

Melkhoutfontein

Situated about 7km inland from the popular seaside holiday

town of Stilbaai, Melkhoutfontein is certainly one of Hessequa’s

most underrated gems. It was established as a fisherman’s

settlement in the 1850s with its cute, white washed and thatch

roofed houses quickly becoming its defining feature.

Melkhoutfontein offers a number of cultural activities.

Stilbaai

Situated on the estuary of the Goukou River, that spills into the

Indian Ocean, the town is characterised by long stretches of

sandy white beaches - four of them boasting the esteemed Blue

Flag Status. The river is navigable for 15km, making it quite the

hot spot for watersports such as canoeing and kayaking. Home

to a number of fascinating archaeological sites.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg was established in 1855 after churchgoers got

permission to build their own Dutch Reformed Church in

Heidelberg. After negotiating with farm owner Louis

Fourie, they bought the farm Doornboom for 5 000

pounds and Heidelberg was born. The town got its name

from the Heidelberg catechism and the German town of

Heidelberg.
