A natureza exuberante também enfeitiçou o navegador russo Urey Lisiansky no mesmo ano: Estas fascinantes costas podem ser reconhecidas como a natureza própria do paraíso; tão pródigas em generosidades que são favorecidas por uma eterna primavera. Líamos, nos contos de fadas, da existência dos jardins encantados, guardados por serpentes e outros monstros venenosos; um reconhecimento desta ilha nos leva a dar crédito a tais maravilhas. Aliás, a presença de animais monstruosos é citada nas crônicas de todos os visitantes. Havia um pavor enorme pelas serpentes “com espessura de uma perna, parecendo serem bastante mortíferas”, escreveu Pernetty. Já o Barão Langsdorff fez um relato mais objetivo: Entre as cobras, sobressaem-se a cobra-coral e a xiraracca. A primeira delas é a mais venenosa e a mais perigosa de todas. Quando os moradores falam sobre ela, acrescentam a observação: morte certa. Quando se está em campo aberto ou na praia, pode-se desviar dela com facilidade. Os habitantes estão expostos ao perigo das mordidas só quando estão na mata derrubando árvores e, descalços, pisam sobre uma delas escondida sob as folhas. Outra fera monstruosa eram os perigosos tigres. Relatos do engenheiro francês Amédée Frézier, em 1712, dão conta de que ao pernoitar em terra ele e sua expedição tiveram que vigiar os tigres que circulavam na Ilha, pois haviam visto pegadas recentes na praia. Frézier avistou uma ilha com uma floresta verde contínua, muita fechada e perigosa, tanto que a população não se arriscava em se embrenhar nela. Pernetty conta que os membros da sua expedição só entravam na mata em grupo, para se socorrerem mutuamente “em caso do ataque de alguma serpente monstruosa ou de algum animal feroz; sobretudo as onças, que os nativos diziam ser mais comuns e cruéis que os tigres”. Havia também, segundo o navegador russo Urey Lisiansky, enormes crocodilos: Nós capturamos um deles e levamos a bordo do “Nadesha” para os naturalistas, que preservaram o couro. We read in fairytale books about enchanted gardens, guarded by serpents and other poisonous monsters; a reconnaissance of this island leads us to give credit to such wonders. In fact, the presence of monstrous animals is quoted in all the visitors’ chronicles. There was an enormous fear of the serpents “as thick as a leg with a lethal air about them”, wrote Pernetty. Baron Langsdorff made a more objective description: The cobra-coral (anilius scytale) and jararaca are the most bountiful. The former is the most poisonous and most dangerous of all of them. When locals talk about it, they add the observation: certain death. When one is in an open area or on the beach one can easily get out of their way. Local inhabitants are only exposed to the dangers of bites when they are in the forest cutting down trees and barefoot, when they could then tread on one of them, hidden under the leaves. The dangerous tigers were another monstrous beast. Reports by the French engineer, Amédée Frézier, in 1712, tell of overnight stays on land when he and his expedition had to be watchful for the tigers that roamed the Island, as they had seen fresh paw marks on the beach. Frézier saw the island as a continual green forest, which was very dense and dangerous, so much so that the population did not risk hiding in the forest. Pernetty relates that the members of his expedition only went into the forest in groups, so they could save each other “in the case of an attack from any monstrous serpent or any ferocious animal; above all, the jaguars which the natives said were more common and crueler than the tigers”. According to the Russian seafarer, Urey Lisiansky, there were also enormous crocodiles: We captured one of them and took it aboard the “Nadesha” for the naturalists, who preserved the skin. Even though this small monster was only a yard long, its scales were not penetrable, even using a large harpoon. It was in reality an inoffensive broad snouted Caiman. The voyagers were also awe inspired by the many bird species. Species, which are now extinct or no longer to be found on the Island, are quoted in a number of chronicles, like for example the large blue macaws. The naturalist Louis Choris described the
