ICT for Green and Sustainability: a case for action for CIO
Companies’ CIOs might be involved in organization’s “Green IT” initiative, which
has likely focused on reducing energy consumption in the data center or power
management strategy for IT assets. But have they been involved in the company’s
transformation to becoming a “green business” that is, using IT for green initiatives
Manufacturers, energy companies, retailers, and financial institutions are some of the
organizations charging forward on a path toward environmental sustainability. They are
seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and become more energy efficient through a
variety of approaches that touch upon building construction, product design, supplier
relationships, energy production, and a myriad other internal business processes.
Energy Insights believes that CIOs have an unique opportunity to get in front of this sea
of change with “IT for Green”.
Data Centre Economics
Whether the economy or your business is shrinking or growing it is easy to overlook
the tangible benefits of a comprehensive energy efficiency strategy. All too often these
benefits are lost in the sea of unclear Green - and often conflicting - messaging aimed
at business leaders. While power availability has been a problem, EU legislation is also
likely to be a key factor in the medium term with Carbon Reduction targets driving
efficiency measures.
This session will discuss the pragmatic steps available to improve energy efficiency
and carbon reduction, studying how Dell’s internal efforts have resulted in substantial
operational savings and continue to help our customers achieve similar savings
worldwide.
Estudo de Caso Volkswagen Australia
Volkswagen Australia with the assistance of Supply Chain Consulting Pty Ltd has
undertaken a carbon emission assessment of their three sites in New South Wales. This
was done as part of their overall environmental strategy for the Australian business. The
carbon footprint exercise was undertaken using CarbonView. The software converts
business data about energy outputs into CO2-e by using nationally approved carbon
emission factors thereby giving a full carbon footprint for a company.
Volkswagen Australia undertook a full carbon assessment within the four walls of
their Australian operations. They chose to include all of the scope one, two and three
emissions. Scope three emissions are voluntary to measure however Volkswagen
Australia wanted to get a full company carbon footprint for their operations so they
could understand their full carbon impact and also look at ways to address this
impact. The measurement of all emission scope levels is encouraged by Supply Chain
Consulting Pty Ltd as part of a complete carbon management strategy.
