Sedimentary DynamicsThe main scientific objective of this group is to study the sedimentary dynamics of the Portuguese continentalshelf and coastal zone in the present and recent past, and to assess the forcing mechanisms in operation. Thequantification of observed changes induced by processes such as sediment transport and erosion, are their maingoal. In particular, current research is focused on: shore & estuarine dynamics, sediment transport on the shelf, evolution of the littoral zone and the application of historical sources to the interpretation of past sedimentation2
processes.TG 2. Biogeochemical Cycles & Natural and Anthropogenic Changes to the EnvironmentThe study of material fluxes including xenobiotic materials, between terrestrial and marine aquatic environments, may take place on a multitude of spatial and temporal scales and, hence, the study of such fluxes is, by necessity, multidisciplinary. The main objectives of this research group are to investigate: the influence of water-sedimentinteractions on the process of OM diagenesis, the distribution, transport, fate and bioavailability of xenobiotics andtheir effects in the marine environment at different levels of biological organisation, environmental changes on thesouthern Iberian Peninsula induced by climatic variations, and the dynamics of microbial trophic loops.TG 3. The Structure of the Earths CrustThe volcanic and hydrothermal activity on divergent plate boundaries is a one of most fascinating topics inmultidisciplinary research. This group actively contributes to gravimetric, geomagnetic and tectonic investigationsof the Azores area as well as to the study of stress fields in oceanic ridges with a particular emphasis on themodels of “ridge overlaps” and ridge faulting. Both investigative approaches are currently contributing to thebetter understanding of plate tectonics and Earth surface dynamics.TG 4. Dynamics and Energy Transfers in the OceansThe interactions and the transfer of mass and energy between the atmosphere and the coastal ocean play adecisive role in establishing patterns of coastal circulation and hydrography, controlling both the distribution ofmesoscale anomalies and the availability of nutrients. Two different approaches are used in this study: throughthe direct and remote observation and interpretation of mesoscale phenomena that occur in the Iberian CoastalTransition Zone, and through the numerical modelling of these phenomena.TG 5. Technologies in Environmental RehabilitationAs coastal zones are frequently densely populated and intensely exploited by the tourist industry, they requirethat flexible and efficient technology be developed to supply water for human consumption, and to treat andrecycle wastewater. To this end, the group works on the optimization of conventional water treatment processesand on the development of advanced technologies based on membrane separation, adsorption, flotation andinfiltration. Particular attention is being paid to the removal of cianobactérias and associated toxins.ORGANIZAÇÃO DA UNIDADE ................ORGANIZAÇÃO(PT):O CIMA foi criado em 1998 e integra cientistas de várias áreas da ciência e da tecnologia da Universidade doAlgarve.
