Definição<br />
O sorriso gengival é uma entidade clínica extremamente complexa, que apresenta diversas etiologias<br />
e, sendo assim, alguns tipos de tratamento. Pode ser definido como uma alteração estética<br />
relativamente frequente caracterizada pela exibição excessiva das gengivas durante o movimento do<br />
lábio superior para o sorriso. 1-110 É o resultado de uma relação inadequada entre a borda inferior do<br />
lábio superior, o posicionamento dos dentes anteriores superiores, a localização da maxila e a posição<br />
da margem gengival em relação à coroa dentária 49,66,72 (Fig. 1.1 A-K).<br />
A composição de um sorriso considerado belo, atraente e saudável envolve o equilíbrio entre<br />
forma e simetria dos dentes, lábios e gengivas, além da maneira com que esses elementos se relacionam<br />
e se harmonizam com a face do paciente. 17,47-49,56,57,61,64-66,68,71<br />

A partir destas duas definições clássicas, surgem algumas dúvidas: o que é estético? O que é<br />
belo?<br />
Estética pode ser definida como a ciência da beleza na natureza e na arte, enquanto belo é o<br />
que faz despertar prazer ou admiração, aquilo que apresenta beleza, simetria, proporção e harmonia.<br />
Na arte, devem-se considerar três princípios: ordem, simetria e proporção 111 (Fig. 1.2 A-P).<br />

Existem alguns princípios de estética odontológica que permitem compreender de forma mais<br />
clara o que pode determinar um sorriso estético, belo e atraente. Estes princípios de estética podem<br />
ser divididos em faciais, dentais e periodontais, o que será melhor abordado no próximo capítulo<br />
(Fig. 1.3 A-E).<br />

Embora estejamos falando de beleza e estética, a Odontologia é, além disso, uma profissão<br />
relacionada à saúde e ao bem-estar dos pacientes. A Periodontia, particularmente, talvez seja a especialidade<br />
que esteja mais estritamente ligada à saúde, e existem alguns princípios periodontais<br />
muito fortemente associados a ela (Fig. 1.4 A-F).<br />

Quais seriam as técnicas cirúrgicas mais comumente encontradas? Como é feito nosso protocolo<br />
cirúrgico de correção do sorriso gengival? Quais são os materiais e instrumentais utilizados, baseados<br />
na nossa filosofia de trabalho? Como é nosso preparo pré-cirúrgico e os cuidados pós-operatórios<br />
em busca da previsibilidade e da qualidade do pós-operatório?<br />
Finalmente, se estamos buscando harmonia e equilíbrio entre face, dentes, lábios e gengivas,<br />
muitos destes pacientes, ao final da cirurgia, recebem tratamento restaurador e protético em busca<br />
dos objetivos descritos anteriormente. Muitos destes casos são multidisciplinares (Fig. 1.5 A-U).<br />

O terceiro bloco envolve a finalização e manutenção dos casos tratados. Denominamos este bloco<br />

indiretas, recursos tecnológicos voltados para cirurgia de correção do sorriso gengival, uso de toxina<br />

de cirurgia de correção de sorriso gengival, contendo procedimentos que serão abordados<br />
nos diversos capítulos presentes nessa obra. Boa leitura e boa diversão a todos.<br />
