Which Tião should I talk about? There are so many.
The Tião that came to me at Denison, during those incredible and terrible 1960’s, brought by Sampa, another lifelong friend.
Who introduced himself with the credentials of having just dropped out of med school, with an unexpected taste for great ads, and for
rewriting them his own way. He became a proofreader right on the spot – the most rigorous and relentless proofreader I’ve ever worked
with. But that didn’t last long. He soon became a copywriter.
The Tião who wrote straight with crooked lines. Literally. A true artisan. He built texts by hand, sideways, jumping chaotically from one
newsprint sheet to another. At the end, the flawless copy. With no room to put in or take out an extra comma - headline after headline,
line by line.
That was Tião the copywriter, who wrote with the elegance of a Drummond. Who played soccer with the elegance of an Ademir da Guia.
Who shot pool with the elegance of a Joaquinzinho (the only player I’ve ever seen who made the balls sneak over the table, hitting each
other in a miraculously quiet encounter).
The Tião with prophetic humor. The one who, one fine day, when I was about to get separated from the same woman for the third time,
sentenced me:
“Ercílio, you must realize that your separation didn’t work out.”
Tião the talking cricket, whom I always wanted near me. He was so generous that once, when we were working at different agencies, he
authorized me to rescue an old rejected idea of his, which resulted on a commercial with multiple awards and unusual credits: “based on
an original idea by Sebastião Teixeira and Rubem Sampaio.”
Tião the dreamer, the perfect combination of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. He pursued his dream. And planned the day after, step by step.
Tião the discreet one, who never wanted to stand out. Who simply wanted to be Tião. At the most, Tiãozinho.
The Tião who was the Creative Club’s real president, I confess, while I pretended to preside it. And I dare to say he did the same with
Ciro Pelicano, with Raul Cruz Lima, with Ana Carmen, and with Washington. Tião was the soul of the Club, behind each one of us.
Driven by pure passion.
Passionate for ideas, he sought them and fought for them. Without ever fighting with anyone. I never heard Tião raise his voice.
Not even when I provoked him during our endless conversations into the night.
The Tião that was never bitter or resentful, who never spoke ill of anyone, even if someone deserved it.
Tião, always so serene that many people mistook him for being sad.
Tião, the sad one, said those close to him. To which he gave the answer that became his definitive trademark:
“I am sad, but I am happy.”
The Tião who was passionate about politics. Who, like all of us, during the fight for re-democratization, worked for a candidate.
With a difference: we wanted to put a campaign on the streets. Tião went to the streets with the campaign. So many times, on Paulista
Avenue, we would come out of a movie theater and meet Tião giving out pamphlets he had created himself. “Darcy Passos for federal
representative.” That would make us all feel guilty.
The Tião who, more than just beautiful campaigns, created copywriters. Whom he would put under his wings, with their names ahead
of his – such as Carlos Domingos, Chester, Gustavo Nogueira, to name just a few.
The Tião who certainly had nothing to do with this century. Or the other. Who was a Renaissance man - a man of every science and every art.
Tião the alchemist, who projected and built a complex system for capturing rain water on his ranch, in Santa Isabel. For turning rain water
into drinking water. That was way before the water crisis (a news segment on Globo TV can prove it).
The Tião with that eternal redneck wisdom. Who always brought with him his childhood from Ribeirão dos Índios. And who led me on
walks through the trees on his ranch, dozens and dozens of species, all planted by him, naming each one by its birthname, the one in
Latin, with astonishing and natural intimacy.
Tião the philosopher. So much so that, near the end of his life, he decided to study philosophy. Not like we would do, taking a quick
course, a few talks and that’s it. No. This was not Tião. Tião the stoic went to college. He graduated and became a philosophy teacher
at a high school in Santa Isabel.
Tião the kind, the generous, the patient, the resourceful, the tolerant, the gentle one, the teacher, the apprentice, the philosopher, the artist,
the conciliator, the best of friends.
The Tião with no pretensions, no hate, no prejudice.
The Tião with no vanity.
I mean: the devil spared Tião.
Tião the endless.
Goodbye, my friend. We are atheists, but I know that you are with God. And that you finally became what you never wanted to be: a star.
