Powered by Vermonterswho stepped up to help vulnerable neighborsduring the pandemic, the CommunityFoundation, its fundholders, and charitablepartners made $31.9 million in grants, morethan 90 percent of which went directly intoVermont communities. This represents a 24percent increase from 2019 and more thana 70 percent increase from 2018 grantmaking.Vermont Community Foundation grantsin 2020 also represent nearly a quarter of allannual philanthropic grantmaking in the statein a typical year according to data from theFoundation Center.“Last year was extraordinarily challengingfor so many, but it also revealed the best ofVermonters and the power of what we can dotogether,” says Vermont Community FoundationPresident and CEO Dan Smith. “Fromcollege and career training to food access,housing, equity and belonging, wellness, andyouth programs—not to mention starting toaddress systemic challenges that make Vermontuniquely vulnerable to disruptions likethe pandemic—the breadth of what was accomplishedacross Vermont communities cannotbe overstated.”The dramatic increase in grantmaking wasdriven by the VT COVID-19 Response Fund,through which more than $8.7 million hasbeen granted since the start of the pandemicto support basic needs and fund five economicand social recovery initiatives. At the heart ofthe Community Foundation’s discretionarygrantmaking is closing the opportunity gapin Vermont. As elsewhere, the conditions thathold Vermonters back by geography, by race,and by family background were acceleratedby the pandemic and continue to impact recoveryefforts and long-term community resilience.Highlights of the Community Foundation’sdiscretionary grantmaking from 2020include:• A $150,000 grant to the Vermont SchoolBoards Association, the Vermont Principals’Association, and the Vermont SuperintendentsAssociation to facilitate learning aroundequity, power, and privilege so they can supportindividual members to implement bestpractices on the ground. A $50,000 grant tothe Vermont League of Cities and Towns tosupport similar work with municipalities.• Grants totaling $340,000 to Vermont TechnicalCollege ($145,000) and Community Collegeof Vermont ($195,000) to make the sevenBest Bet career training programs identifiedby the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundationaffordable for Vermonters in 2021.
