CONTEXT
The water crisis in Paraná was aggravated in
April 2021, which resulted in being the driest
month since 1998 in 8 cities, including Curitiba,
which has had a water supply rotation since
2020 (Simepar, 2021).
The improper use and reuse of the water

PROJETO III
DESAFIO
interesse social aplicando estratégias de Design for Sustainable Behavior (DfSB). A disciplina
(GARCIA, 2019).

PROJECT III
CHALLENGE
The challenge presented to the students in this discipline proposed developing a solution that
would result in the rational use of water and/or energy in bathing within social welfare housing
applying Design for Sustainable Behavior (DfSB) strategies. The discipline took place in two steps
involving the development of the concepts and their redesign, respectively. Considering the social
restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 Pandemic, the interaction among the teams and the data
collection for the informational project occurred in a remote environment. The students used data
and information about users described in the Design Master's dissertation on Sustainable
consumption and the habit of bathing: meta-concepts of sustainable product + service systems for
social welfare housing (GARCIA, 2019).

ENTERTAINMENT AS A TOOL TO INFLUENCE A LESS
AUTOMATIC AND MORE CONSCIOUS BATHING PRACTICE

In a hydric crisis context, every water drop counts, and those
long and relaxing baths accompanied by music are no longer
very common.
Being installed in the water pipe of the showerhead, Maestro
holds a loudspeaker, a flow sensor that records water and
energy expenditure, and a mini hydroelectric generator that
uses this same water to work with a clear energy font.
Being controlled by a smartphone, the users can set their
bath time (10 minutes maximum) and the kind of
entertainment that they will consume (from personal libraries).
Maestro will alert the users about elapsed time through
different colors and sound beats to guide the user's attention
to make bathing an increasingly consistent task, being less
automatic and more conscious.

MAESTRO
Redesign
onde refinamos o desenho do exterior.
produto seja destacado, mantendo a parte superior acoplada

In the second cycle of the Project III discipline, our team efforts
were towards the aesthetical and technical evolution of
Maestro, based on Ditle team feedback. Even with a concept
and theoretical basis already established, the origin of the
aesthetic-formal characteristics of the product was not yet
evident.
Thus, we developed a moodboard from the personas, and
several points were raised and taken to a new round of
alternatives where we refined the exterior design.
Then, we developed a new solution aimed at maintenance
situations. It was carried out to minimizing interference in the
user's bathing area (since the Maestro installation takes place at
the water outlet). It allows the lower compartment of the
product to be detached, keeping the upper chamber attached
to the shower. A reorganization of the internal components was
necessary and a technical solution to gain interior space.

AUXÍLIO NA MANUTENÇÃO DA HIGIENE DURANTE A ESCASSEZ DE
ÁGUA
HELPING TO MAINTAIN HYGIENE DURING WATER SCARCITY
No vocabulário popular, ‘‘Xuá’’ significa banho.

In the Brazilian popular vocabulary, "Xuá" means bath. From
childhood to adulthood, the meaning is the same. Bath! The fun
bath brings warmth, tranquility, and dignity. From these
principles, our project is born, making the lives of those who suer
from rationing dignified, reassuring those who no longer see other
possibilities, and bringing warmth to everyone who considers
bathing a fundamental ritual for their routine.
The product-service system (PSS) was designed to be available
in major urban points and locations with low water supply,
providing dry bath capsules that enable users to take three baths
by combining antiseptic wipes with a gel solution. Through
totems installed at strategic points, users can purchase Xuá for
in-machine sales, facilitating purchases via the app or directly
from the urban interface.
Carrying sustainability as a fundamental requirement, our
packaging is 100% recyclable, being collected at the same points
of sale and directed to partner cooperatives. It also offers benefits
to users and makes them more aware of their consumption. The
partnership with Grupo Boticário enables the production and
operation of this urban interface, allowing everyone to have
access to dignified hygiene and give new meaning to the act of
taking a shower, increasingly saving one of the most valuable
resources on the planet, water.

Redesign

From the production of effective communication to technical detailing,
the project’s developments had initial leverage the inquiry made by an
external look at its development, which pointed out the main aspects to
be amplified in the second construction cycle.
The interface rescues its initial premises by communicating the
environmental impact of saving water and inducing the user to reeducate
conscious disposal. It explains all the points of socioenvironmental
transformation through digital and physical graphic
materials, which can be conveyed in the main digital means of
communication and urban points of constant flux. The technical detailing
of the interface brings a better understanding of its main requirements,
enabling a series of tests and validations of the totem and capsule,
putting the user always at the center of the discussions. The interface
design undergoes dimensional and technical changes that make more
sense to its proposal usage.
External observations proved to be fundamental to the development of
the project as a whole, bringing relevant provocations to the technical
evolution and communication of the project, reaffirming the relevance of
the interface in the social sphere to bring a new opportunity to form a
world with less waste.

ARMAZENAGEM E FILTRAGEM DE ÁGUA CINZA PARA
REUSO NÃO POTÁVEL
COLET.Á: A SET OF GRAYWATER STORAGE AND
FILTRATION PRODUCTS FOR NON-POTABLE REUSE
armazena a água utilizada durante o banho, possibilitando o
coletada no banho.

The project's trigger is water wastage during the shower, focused in
Curitiba and the Metropolitan Region residences with up to five people
living at the same house. Based on data collection and Aline Garcia’s
dissertation on sustainable consumption and bathing habits, the main
problem pointed out involving storage and reuse of greywater from
thebaths.
From that point and various stages of alternatives generation, the
solution developed was the COLET.Á, a collector mat that stores the
water used during bathing, enabling the use of this water as a toilet
discharge. In parallel with the mat development, was elaborate a
concept product for filtering and prolonged storage of water collected
from the bath, called the Station of Filtration. It can be restructured in the
future to collect and filter greywater from other suppliers, like the washing
machine.

COLET.Á
Redesign
Filtragem. O primeiro produto coleta a água utilizada ao lavarse
segundo produto possibilita a filtragem do sabão, cabelos,
21
COLET.Á combines a Collecting Mat and a Filtration Station. The
first product collects the water used during bathing, enabling the
immediate use of this water as toilet flush, for example. The
second product makes it possible to filter soap, hair, lint present
in the water collected by the mat. It allows the storage of a more
significant amount of water for other purposes such as washing
cars and sidewalks and storing water from the washing machine.
The redesign of COLET.Á was carried out based on Gota Team’s
feedback, a project review, and the professors’ suggestions.
The points analyzed in deeper were concerning the ergonomy,
disassembly, and cleaning of the products. The Collecting Mat
has become lighter and can collect up to 8L of bathing water. It
also has an improved anti-insect, anti-leakage cap, and grooves
to better grip the mat's handle. The filtering station has become
more compact, allowing it to be used in the laundry area with
greater convenience. The storage capacity has increased to 70
liters. The water withdrawal occurs through a 12V electric that
consumes little energy, avoiding physical effort to pump the water
and use it.

BATHING WATER

The water crisis is a growing concern in our society. Water
waste, decreased rainfall, and increased water consumption
due to population growth are some of the most common
causes of this scenario. When it comes to children's bathing,
the lack of knowledge about consumption is a concern since
bathing is often a time for play. Considering that, the Ditle
project aims to link school education with bathing habits.
Ditle is a portable game of daily care of a virtual pet,
connecting the child's routine and care with the pet, allowing
the data collection of bathing time in real-time. When users
activate the bath option, Ditle starts counting the time of the
pet and the child, understanding the importance of caring
about the value of water in a relaxed way. Ditle promotes
research and data analysis linked to environmental education
in school, turning children into agents of transformation and
future adults more aware of the rational use of water.

Redesign

Ditle’s redesign was based on the professors’ feedbacks,
mainly on comments raised by Maestro Team. We created a
new external design to contemplate the suggestions made
for the game, rethinking users’ needs, lifestyle and also
introducing pixel art references. The screen limits pixel Art,
which has child appeal, regardless of gender. We reviewed
the format, the possible accumulation of water, the isolation
of the sound inputs and outputs, the input for the power
cable, and a better specification of materials. These changes
were essential for the child awareness device to become
more coherent with the proposal and the theme, encouraging
creativity and interpretation through the connection between
design and emotion. In addition, through the raised doubts,
solutions were found and clarified using 3D, graphic and
textual representations. All these tools helped improve the
understanding of the product, making it more pleasant and
potential for usage.

Ecoa is a line of packaging developed with the aim of
reducing water consumption during showering, without
changing users’ habits, reducing movement during usage
and, consequently, showering time.
In the project redesign, we had the opportunity to expand the
line, offering two volume options, 100ml and 200ml, with
compatible lids between them. We solve technical issues
related to activation during usage and reduce potential water
accumulation points, in addition to facilitating transport. We
defined a new form of replenishment, with water-soluble refill,
simplifying distribution and enabling sale in small local
businesses.
All changes were made after analysis and suggestions by the
Xuá team and weekly guidelines, always with the objective of
reducing water consumption in an accessible manner,
especially for the public with lower purchasing power.

PROPORCIONAR CONSCIÊNCIA DE GASTO NO BANHO
SENSORS AND ECO-FEEDBACK PANEL TO PROVIDE BATH TIME
AWARENESS
No entanto, é

Gota is a project which primary goal is to make the perception of
bath time more noteworthy and rationalize water consumption
within the home.
The goal is to help mainly people who benefit from the social tariff, a
State government program for the low-income population that aims
to charge SANEPAR a single fee per month, as long as the
beneficiaries meet the requirements. One of these requirements is
consuming less than 10,000 liters per month, or 2,500 liters per
person (more than four residents). However, it is common for people
included in the social tariff to lose the benefit because they do not
control their water consumption and exceed the consumption
limited by the program. Thus, Gota came to support such control
and perception of consumption, composed of three parts. The first
part is a sensor that calculates the flow and the spending of water.
The second part is a control panel that shows the duration of the
bath and the number of liters spent in real-time. Finally, the third part
is a chip for the general water meter that sends reports to the Gota
app informing the total consumption of the house.
