Sometime later in the weekend I saw a social

media post that included an aerial photo

of the chain of lakes showing how the ice

is breaking up. Amazing! The perspective

is completely different from that vantage

as you can see all the seams through the

Telling tales

Once a month Emily Ostrander

likes to tell tales.

But the naturalist for Lyon

County Conservation keeps them

to truthful tales about animals and

nature during the monthly Nature

Tales children’s program.

The Nature Tales for the month of

April will take place at the Little Rock

Public Library at 3 p.m. Wednesday,

April 6, and at the George Public Library

at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13.

The program is aimed at school

age children over the age of 5 and

lasts 45 minutes to an hour.

The program runs

monthly from October through

April and has been a part of Ostrander’s

offerings for more than 10 years

since she started working with Lyon

County Conservation.

Each month offers something new

for the kids to learn about.

“We just had endangered species,

with an elephant tusk, whale’s tooth,

a hawksbill sea turtle mount and

much more, and we have had animal

tongues with a chameleon, then we

also had animal babies with baby

ducks,” Ostrander said. “I have not

really repeated any

of the programs in

10 years. Sometimes

we follow themes

like the books by

Sandra Markle

‘What if you have

animal ears, feet,

tongue or fur?’”

April’s theme will

be “Eggs and Nests.”

Each Nature Tales

program starts the

same way.

“We always start

Nature Tales with a

book or two. We do

a game or activity —

like in February we

did bird beaks and

used different tools

to try and eat like

birds, like tweezers

for a woodpecker

eating bugs out of

the wood, a syringe

for a hummingbird

sucking nectar out

of flowers and tongs

for a great blue heron eating fish in

water,” Ostrander said. “We played

an eye spy game to see if we have

eagle eyes. Then we end with a craft

or a snack that follows the theme.

This month we will be making a

bird’s nest chocolate snack.”

In an effort to teach the kids more

about eggs and nests, Ostrander is

most looking forward to showing

Lyon County

Conservation

offers Nature Tales

youth program

them the replicas of eggs from different

birds.

Ostrander just plain enjoys hosting

Nature Tales.

“It’s a fun thing for kids to do after

school in the winter months,” Ostrander

said. “It’s also a great way to

partner with libraries to get kids in

to check out books and learning new

things.” F

The annual Spring Market event will be held at Round Lake Vineyards

& Winery in Round Lake, MN, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April

It’s time to get out of the house.

And Round Lake Vineyards & Winery has

the event to give you the perfect excuse to

get out and enjoy some much deserved time

away from home, where many have hunkered

down this winter.

Round Lake Vineyards & Winery will be

hosting its annual Spring Market event from

11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, April 10.

“This is an annual event that we’ve done

for several years. It’s very popular because

people want to get out and enjoy the spring.

We’ve been lucky and have always had good

weather so people can wander the property,”

said owner Scott Ellenbecker. “I’ll have the

patio set up with space heaters so people can

enjoy the spring. We’ve also completed the

interior remodel which gives us much more

indoor space.”

The event gives people the opportunity to

shop the products brought by local crafters,

artists and vendors all while enjoying the

beautiful grounds of the vineyard while sipping

on a glass of wine or a mimosa.

“We currently have over 30 exhibiting vendors

signed up to display their goods. Guests

to the winery are invited to get a glass of wine

and shop,” said Ellenbecker. “Exhibitors will

be located in both the Winery tasting room

and restaurant building and event Cellar

building.”

People will find plenty of items while they

shop.

“We’ve got vendors showing homemade

crafts to corporate goods. From spices to

soaps, jewelry to planters,” Ellenbecker said.

This event might feature shopping but for

many the day is about much more than that.

“This is a shopping event, but we also see

friends and couples hanging out and having

fun. Many will come in a carload and stay for

the afternoon and enjoy the winery. This is

more than shopping, like many activities at

the winery, it’s a social event,” Ellenbecker

said.

After the coronavirus pandemic, Ellenbecker

has noticed that the Spring Market is

featuring more vendors who unleashed their

creativity due to being cooped up because of

the pandemic.

“We’ve grown this every year except 2020,

of course. We’re seeing more handcrafted

items, boutique clothing and jewelry and

unique ideas,” Ellenbecker said. “That’s a

result of all the creativity that came from the

lockdown in 2020. I’m looking forward to

the new ideas and energy in the room that

comes from an open market setting.” F

LOST ART

Weave your way into a fun new class at

the Pearson Lakes Art Center.

Performing arts director Rachelle

Fratzke will actually be taking the lead on this

one as she teaches students the skills to make

their own handwoven basket.

Specifically, they’ll be making a New England

Tote in the class scheduled for 9 a.m.-4

p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the art center in

Okoboji.

The class will cost $45 for members of the

art center or $55 for nonmembers.

“I started weaving baskets years ago and had

an instructor in Waterloo who was excellent

and just took it from there,” Fratzke said. “I

was doing my designs for a long time then put

it on the back burner so to speak and now I’m

back at it.”

Fratzke has a taught a couple similar courses

over the past several years at the art center

and enjoys the opportunity to bring a lost

skill set to the forefront.

Participants will learn about reed types,

cutting reed, soaking and weaving the basket

from the base up.

“I enjoy it. It’s kind of a lost skill set that

people are not doing as much anymore. Plus,

I like projects you can start and finish in a day

and with a basket you can usually do that,”

Fratzke said.

All supplies will be included in the class,

which is geared toward those with entry level

up to intermediate skill levels.

“If you’re new to basket weaving it will just

maybe take a little longer as you learn the

basic phrasing and techniques,” Fratzke said.

Optional studio time is set up for 5-8 p.m.

Thursday, April 14, for anyone who needs a

bit more time to wrap things up.

Education director Holly Zinn Hample is

happy the art center can offer another medium

for people to practice.

“It’s a medium not a lot of people get to explore,”

Zinn Hample said. “Feeling the reeds

Basket weaving class on deck at

Pearson Lakes Art Center

and working with that is different than other

kinds of sculptural art mediums. It’s also utilitarian

but you can take it as artistically as you

would like. This is a basket you could easily

take with you to the farmers market or keep

as a decoration at home.” F

Comedy night returns to Roof Garden

OUT LOUD

Michael Longfellow has told jokes on

television, on stages around the country

and will bringing his act to the Iowa

Great Lakes.

He’s next up for Comedy Night at the Roof

Garden Ballroom in Arnolds Park.

The show is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9,

with tickets priced at $15 in advance or $20 at

the door.

“He’s got some great credits and television

appearances under his belt,” said Paul Plumb,

marketing manager at Arnolds Park Amusement

Park. “He’s really funny and I think

people will really enjoy the show.”

Some of Longfellow’s appearances include

stand-up sets on “CONAN,” “Hidden America

with Jonah Rey” and “Bring the Funny” on NBC.

Longfellow was also runner-up at the Laughing

Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta and chosen

as one of TBS’s Comics to Watch.

Now audiences will get to do exactly that,

while laughing right along, in person, at the

Roof Garden.

Bringing comedy regularly to the Iowa Great

Lakes is just another way for the park to maximize

the potential of what is still a relatively

new facility for the area.

“The comedy shows have been a great way

for us to use this tremendous facility in the

offseason as well and generate more interest in

the Roof Garden,” Plumb said. “Comedy Night

continues to grow each time with more and

more people getting involved and coming to

enjoy that experience and this will be another

great show.” F

A new stage will be in place

for the concerts on Preservation

The main beams and parts of

the roof have gone up over the

past couple weeks as the major

project continues to progress.

“You can really start to tell what

will look like in the end now and

it’s really exciting to watch that

take place,” Plumb said.

A major grand opening concert

is in the works for later in the

summer, which Plumb says with

will be a great event for the community.

Lake Street is undergoing a

major renovation simultaneously

and Plumb says it will be a great

improvement for the street and

“They’ve got the main concrete
