6. EFFECT OF PHYTOHORMONES ON THE ORGANOGENESIS OF
EGGPLANT USING NODAL EXPLANTS.

Eggplant is one of the principal food yielding plants in India, the aim of the work is to
increase the productivity of the plant.
Solanum meongena L. was successfully micropropagated using cotyledonary node
explant. The aseptic nodes of the young plant formed multiple shoots within five weeks when
cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with cytokinins-N6 Benzyl
adenine (BAP 2.0mg/L) and -2 Indole Pyrolidone (2iP 1.0mg/L).
The addition of NAA had no significant effect on multiple shoots formation of this
plant. The supplementation of 0.5mg/L BAP with half strength MS medium sufficient for the
proliferation multiple shoots and root induction of S.melongena L.
A single cotyledonary node has developed 70-80 shoots within 60 days. About 90 %
of the shoots developed roots following transfer to half strength MS medium. 70 % of the
plantlets were successfully acclimatized and established in soil.
