ProfeLAC CALF REARING PROGRAM:1. BioSecurity - Calf disease prevention starts with goodhygiene and disinfection management. Thoroughly cleanand disinfect pens, sheds and shelters with VirKon ® S(diluted 1:100 with water) between batches and all feedingequipment between feeds. Maintain pen/shed hygiene witha weekly application of VirKon ® S or NaturClean.2. Colostrum Feeding - Within the first 12 hours of life, calvesmust receive 10% of their body weight of first colostrum(larger breeds require 4-5L - smaller breeds require 2-3L).Ideally tube-feed 4L (2L in smaller breeds) straight afterbirth or feed half the volume straight away and theremainder within 12 hours. Continue to feed colostrum ortransition milk for the first three days of life.3. Weak or ‘At Risk’ calves that won’t suckle will benefit fromadditional energy. Administer 15mL of ProfeSTART EnergyPlus PASTE on consecutive days to boost energy levelsand aid appetite. (Available Autumn 2011).4. After 24 hours of life, administer 5mL of ProfeSTART PRO-Biotic GEL to inoculate and establish the intestinalmicroflora in the gut of newborn calves.5. Post colostrum feeding - ensure calves receive at least500g of ProfeLAC each day (375g for smaller breeds). Forbest results, and to avoid gastric discomfort, offer calves a50:50 blend of colostrum and ProfeLAC for 3 days prior tocomplete milk replacer feeding.6. For safe and effective Coccidia prevention and control, select ProfeLAC GOLD as the milk replacer of choice.7. To aid digestion, gut health and natural production, supplement the milk in the first weeks of life with BioCalfPrebiotic Food (purified oligosaccharide nutrient) at4g/10kg BWT/calf/day.8. If scours or calf morbidity occurs offer Bovelyte, in betweenmilk feeds for 2 days, to replace electrolytes and reversedehydration.Add ProfeSTART PRO-Biotic POWDER to the milk at 10gper calf per day for 10 days to aid intestinal microbialbalance and digestion. If scours persist beyond 2 days -seek veterinary assistance.9. Calves should be fed warm liquid feed during the first 3weeks of life. Once daily feeding can be introduced from 14days of age. Milk solids can be increased in cold weather tomaintain calf health and welfare. For every 5°C drop intemperature, feed an extra 35-50g of powder /calf/day.10. Fresh and good quality solid feed (calf starter) or mueslican be fed free choice from day 4 of life to aid rumen walldevelopment.11. Calves should be allowed access to some straw or ameasured amount of hay (eg via hay feeder). Ensure thequantity of straw/hay provided or consumed does notinterfere with calf starter intake.12. Calves must have access to fresh clean water at all times tomaintain hydration status and to stimulate calf starter intake.13. Good quality hay should be available free choice when calfstarter intake exceeds 500g/day (individual pens) or800g/day (group housing). Introduction of roughage at thispoint enables enlargement of the rumen.14. Weaning - Calves can be weaned when consumption ofcalf starter feed reaches 1kg/day over 3 consecutive days.Abrupt Weaning - reduce milk intake by 50% and feedonce daily for one whole week then stop milk feedingaltogether.Gradual Weaning - reduce daily milk intake by 0.5-1.0L forweek one then reduce milk intake by another 0.5-1.0L forweek two, and so on until milk feeding is finished.15. Post Weaning - To avoid weight checks after weaning, ensure access to calf starter feed for another 3 weeks(minimum).FEEDING CALVES:Calves should be fed at least 500g (375g for smaller breeds)of ProfeLAC GOLD powder daily to ensure maintenancerequirements are met with added nutrients to support growth– refer table.
