........................................................................................................................................................................................................................·········································0International Center forCaptive InsuranceEducationThe International Center forCaptive Insurance Education(ICCIE) celebrated its anniversaryin August 2005 aftercompleting its first year as themdustry's only comprehensivecaptive insurance education programme. And with around 100 students taking ICCIEcourses in its initial 12 months, theprogramme has got off to a strong start. With the majority of its students enrolledin ICCIE's professional designationprogramme, the Associate in CaptiveInsurance (ACI), the independent nonprofitorganisation attracted a diversestudent population including matriculantsfrom varied geographic and professionalbackgrounds."The goal was to create a programme thatwould aim captive and risk managementprofessionals everywhere," says MitchCantor, executive director of ICCIE."The initial response has been tremendous.ICCIE students have come from 28states in the US as well as from Canada,Bermuda, Grand Cayman, Nevis and Dubai. All the feedback has been positive."Mix to matchICCIE students have mixed professionalbackgrounds. While the majority are captiveowners or managers, there are also regulators, banking professionals and other serviceproviders. The range of experience in theprogramme is wide. with some students newto captives while others have two decades inthe industry."It has been a great challenge to tailor acurriculum to meet the needs of a studentbody with a variety of experiences, but Ithink we have hit the mark," says Cantor.ICCIE designation students are required tocomplete the programme's five core coursesand two electives from selected coursesavailable through the lEA and AICPCU. Inaddition, students must attend three teleconferencessponsored by ICCIE or the VermontCaptive Insurance Association (VCIA).Most students are projected to takebetween 18 and 24 months to complete theprogramme, although one student, DavidLippa from southern California, completedthe programme in eight months to becomethe first ACI designee.www.captiveANDart.com, .Developed in collaboration with the 1 T 'University of Vermont, ICCIE's core courses \ he captiveare offered several times a year in both 1online and face-to-face formats. In addition, 1 industry's newlythe electives are completed online, so 1 d d 'students can complete the whole designation \ forme. e ucationfrom wherever they are based, or they can 1stay in the programme despite busy travel \ programmeschedules. 1Cantor says: "The flexibility of the \ celebrates itsprogramme is one of its attractions, and so is 1 f I fthe programme's rigour." He notes a chal- \ success u irst yearlenging programme was one of the primary 1requests made by risk management \professionals when market research was 1conducted for ICCIE prior to its launch. :Professional teachersAnother key, Cantor notes, is the high calibre \of the faculty. "ICCIE is fortunate to have a 1top-shelf group of instructors. There is no \doubt supporting organisations have been 1pleased to see such a highly regarded group \of captive professionals design and teach 1these courses." \And Molly Lambert, board chair for ICCIE, 1who also serves as president of Vermont \Captive Insurance Association (VCIA), says: 1"While student enrollment has been strong, \industry support for the programme has also 1been exceptional. \"More than 50 captive and risk manage- 1ment-related companies have financially \supported ICCIE with contributions, and \many have encouraged top executives to 1serve on ICCIE's board, faculty or working \committees. 1"The industry's adoption of this \programme was absolutely crucial to getting 1it off the ground. I'm pleased to report even \at this early stage the industry has endorsed 1the ACI designation," she says. \One clear piece of evidence regarding the 1programme's universality is the offering of \ICCIE face-to-face courses prior to captive 1conferences, wherever they are. In addition 1to courses offered prior to the VCIAconfer- \ence. ICCIE will also offer a face-to-face \course in DC prior to the CIC-DC conference 1in September, a pre-World Captive Forum \course in Florida in November, and a session 1prior to Arizona's AzCIA conference in May. \Additional conference face-to-face sessions 1are also in the planning stages. 1OICCIEFor informationabout the designation'srequirements or course information andschedules, visit ICCIE's website atwww.iccie.orgVermont 2006(~)9
