With Valentine’s Day just around the
corner, we unpack the growing trend
of supper club dining that is taking
South Africa by storm and offer
some alternative ways to treat your
KITCHEN
Daredevil dining
The South African restaurant
industry is in the throes of
an exciting revolution. The
usual sit down dinner date,
in a conventional location
and with a predictable
menu, is fast being replaced
by smaller intimate dinner
clubs, offering elements
of surprise, adventure and
exclusivity.
If you struggle to keep a secret, then
you need to meet Gregory Zeleny
and his aptly titled mystical dinner
club, SecretEATS. The American set
up the cloak and dagger style dining
experience in March 2013, because
‘there simply was nothing quite like
it out there’.
The aim is to bring adventurous
food lovers and accomplished chefs
together in stunning locations across
South Africa. The only catch, and it’s
a rather a big one, is that nobody
knows the location of the venue,
who’s cooking or what’s on the menu
until the morning of the dinner. The
result of this unique combination of
great wine, even better company and
an unrivalled dining experience is a
delicious mix of excitement, pleasure
and fascination. SecretEATS dinners
are held each month in Cape Town,
Johannesburg and Durban and once
every six weeks in Stellenbosch.
Venues can include anything
from state of the art penthouses
overlooking the ocean to art galleries,
photo studios and abandoned
warehouses. “We like to go for
something that is off the beaten
track,” explains Gregory. “Wine
cellars make extremely good venues,
6

the secret eats
CAPE TOWN
but we have also done a dinner at the
foot of Table Mountain and in the Cape
Town Castle. The quirkier, the better.”
Approximately 40 courageous diners
can be accommodated at any one
dinner and are only informed of the
location on the day via SMS.
The scrumptious menu, created by a
highly talented chef, is only revealed as
the dishes are served on the evening
and no two dinners are ever the same.
“We love to do things differently and
have done two secret lunches and
even a Pulp Fiction themed dinner,”
laughs Gregory. Becoming a member
is easy – simply complete the mini
profile on the website.Once you
receive your invite, which will initially
just outline the day and time of the
next dinner, be sure to pay for and
secure your seat immediately. “Our
dinners sell out very quickly, usually
in 48 hours, so we advise invitees to
secure their seat fast. Our first dinner
in Durban, for example, sold out in six
hours”.
SecretEATS prices depend on the
venue, chef and event, but are
approximately R550 for Cape
Town and Durban and R650 for
Johannesburg.
CAPE TOWN
Outlandish
KITCHEN
8
Embracing the simpler things
in life, Cape Town-based
Outlandish Kitchen aims
to provide an educationcentred
dinner party. Set up
by Zimbabwean-born chef
and food stylist, Jules Mercer, in 2012,
this is a uniquely down to earth dinner
club that is quite literally on the Earth.
“I had set up something similar to
Outlandish Kitchens in Zimbabwe,
but, after moving to Cape Town, I
quickly realised that people here had
very little consumer knowledge of
where their food came from,” says
Jules. People often say they only buy
free range chickens, for example, but
rarely do they know what this process
entails. Outlandish Kitchens aims to
help inform and educate consumers,
as well as increase the accessibility of
local producers to their market.
Jules and her talented team of chefs
also give the diners an opportunity
to taste something unusual. At their
pork-inspired dinner, for example,
diners feasted on a dinner of pig tails
and pigs ears, amongst other foods.
Each dinner has an underlying theme,
but the menu is only ever revealed
on the day of the dinner, so no one
knows what to expect – sometimes
even Jules is left in the dark. “There is
always plenty of great South African
wine and ingredients are so local
and natural that they can sometimes
be found right under diners’ feet!”
explains Jules.
Energy dinner clubs, held on a
biodynamic farm on dates according
to the lunar calendar, have proven
extremely popular and Jules has also
done a book-inspired dinner last year
where diners reviewed cook books
while feasting.
Other events have included ‘the feeshy’
dinner held in Kalk Bay last year,
educating diners on the sustainable
and delicious fish available in the
Saffa seas, which included muscles
and oysters on the menu. Almost
all locations are held in the great
outdoors, and, given the nature of the
dinner clubs, farms, barns and wine
cellars are the most popular venues.
A diary of dinner events is uploaded to
the website and Facebook page, but
diners can also request to be added
to the growing mailing list. Any one
dinner can accommodate between
40 – 100 attendees depending on
location and ticket prices range from
R350 – R575 per person.
ONEINGREDIENT
CAPE TOWN
For an unusually interactive
dinner date, One Ingredient
tickles all the right taste buds.
Captivated by the sights, smells
and tastes of the Mother
City, British-born chef, Matt
Manning, has made South Africa
his home. Alarmed that the creative,
food-focussed city had not yet fully
embraced the global dinner club
trend, he set up One Ingredient in
June 2013 with the simple aim of
equipping Capetonians with the
knowledge, confidence and creative
knack to produce crowning plates of
culinary treats using the simplest of
ingredients.
“One Ingredient is a very hands on
dinner club,” explains Matt. “I choose
a key ingredient and then create
a scintillating four-course menu,
incorporating this one ingredient in
each course.” The menu is revealed
on the website prior to the evening
so that diners know exactly what to
expect and all dietary requirements
are catered for. On arrival, diners can
indulge in some sumptuous canapés,
accompanied by carefully paired wines
from exclusive wine farms like AA
Badenhorst Family Vineyards, Doran,
Maurite Wine Estate, Marianne, The
High Road, Avondale and Jorgensen’s
Distillery.
“Dinner clubs are kept to a maximum
of twenty guests – anything more
and the intimate nature of the
evening is lost,” says Matt. After a
demonstration of each course, diners
have the opportunity to re-create two
of those courses and plate them like
a professional, before taking their
dish into the adjoining dining room,
where they can enjoy it in a relaxed
atmosphere with plenty of freeflowing
wine.
“I usually choose a vegetable, as
people tend to find these difficult
to incorporate into an entire meal,
especially when it comes to dessert,”
explains Matt. For last year’s Valentine’s
Day, Matt decided to use watermelon
as the principal ingredient.
For starters, he created a grilled
watermelon soup with watermelon
truffle foam, which was followed by
a balsamic watermelon with beef,
wild mushrooms and spinach, as
well as a pickled watermelon with
chargrilled tuna. For dessert, there
was a delicious watermelon granita
with hints of vanilla and mango, sitting
on a bed of cashew nut shortbread.
This Valentine’s Day, Matt is going
traditional. “I have chosen chocolate
as my one ingredient. While chocolate
is synonymous with Valentine’s Day,
it is very rare to find chocolate in a
main course and this is what I want to
demystify.” One Ingredient dinners are
held on the 7th floor of the Innovation
Centre in Observatory and cost R500
per person.
RELAX@
GINkGO SPA
STEENBERG

N
estled
14
amongst
signature Sauvignon
Blanc vineyards on the
slopes of the Steenberg
Mountain is the bespoke
Ginkgo Day Spa, at
the Steenberg Estate.With anew
fiancé in tow, we head in for a day
of reflection, revitalisation and
connection. The spa is a modest
building with rosewood floors and
smiling staff. We are beckoned to
wait in the Relaxation Room, whilst
sipping some Chai tea. According
to Ayurvedic (Ancient Indian)
philosophy and medicine, these
spices are considered to be ‘sattvic’,
or calming, vitalising and mentally
clarifying – the perfect antidote
to the stresses of modern life and
appropriate as a pre-treatment
drink.
The couple’s therapy room is a double
room flanked by an oversized bath
and shower. It contains two beds
and a large glass door leading out to
the vineyards, although this is closed
for the duration of the treatments
and the wooden blinds are drawn to
sustain a feeling of tranquillity.
The Ginkgo Tranquillity package
is one of 8 packages offered by
the spa, which tailors packages
for parties, mothers-to-be and the
debutantes.The first treatment is an
aromatic hot spa bath. The Gingko
staffs leave us alone, with a glass of
Steenberg’s signature 1682 MCC in
hand, a personal all-time favourite.
Whilst sipping our bubbly, we soak
in the warm tub, infused with an
aromatic elixir called Liquid Yoga by
Mio Skincare. This is a perfect milkymoisturising
blend of essential oils,
mineral salts and therapeutic herbs,
and the combination of bubbles and
warm water immediately surrender
our bodies to the process.
The spa bath is followed by a full
body exfoliation using Mio Skincare’s
Double Buff. Being particularly
sensitive about body exfoliations, I
interrogate my therapist about the
product. Double Buff is a fine grained
combination of pumice, bamboo,
pineapple, sweet almond oil and
shea butter, which leaves your skin
perfectly polished, re-mineralised,
smooth and supple, and radiating a
healthy glow.
The scrub is applied liberally by hand
and with circular motions. A quick
shower to remove all residue, and
we are now perfectly prepped for
our next treatment.With its healing
properties, clay is an ancient remedy
practiced by the likes of Cleopatra,
the Romans and the early French
cultures, and even the Essenes
(authors of the Dead Sea Scrolls)
were convinced it was the elixir of
youth. It is well known for its healing
effect on gum disease, skin rashes,
haemorrhoids, infected wounds and
bites, and, when ingested, it aids
with digestion problems, circulation
and hormonal imbalances, relief
from chronic constipation, ulcers,
liver, skin, prostate problems and
so much more. Clay assists in the
elimination of troublesome toxins
(including heavy metal toxins) and
can be used regularly in clay baths,
clay body wraps, foot wraps or by
mixing it into a simple clay drink.
Ginkgo Spas offer an array of
therapeutic clay products, including
the ionic detox therapy powder,
which is a system cleanser (to be
taken orally) and the Detox Clay
body wraps, for cellulite, rejuvenation
and relaxation. It is understood that
Indian freedom fighter, Mahatma
Ghandi, was a well-known clay eater.
The clay is brushed on over the entire
body and has an extremely warm,
pleasant sensation on the skin. The
body is then enveloped in a plastic
wrap and you are left to just lie there
and contemplate the awesomeness
of not being able to do anything but
remain still. Being motionless, moist
and warm gives

the clay the opportunity to work its
magic. It gets warm in the plastic,
but not uncomfortable, and I can
literally feel the stress and ache
leave my muscles. I wake from my
slumber about an hour later, feeling
completely un-plugged. Another rinse
off (this is the cleanest I have ever
been) and it’s back on the table for the
highly anticipated full body massage.
Lathered in Mio Skincare’s Future
Proof, firming active body butter, the
rest of the hour is a complete blur. I
feel gentle but firm strokes, but, to be
honest, I am so relaxed at this stage
that I sleep for another hour and only
wake to turn over. The body butter is
a combination of reishi mushroom,
blueberry and pomegranate extract,
amongst other amazing things. This
superfood combination serves to
leave your skin deeply moisturised
and firmer, with more elasticity,
and increases skin thickness and
promotes smoother, brighter skin
tone and texture.
I’m rather glad that I am not required
to get up and take another shower
after the massage and before the
next treatment, because I literally
can’t move after the deep relaxation.
I remember that my fiancé is with me
too, so manage to give him a sideways
wink. He was so quiet during the last
few hours that I forgot he was even
there! The BABOR Classic Facial is a real
treat. The SKINOVAGEPX treatment
is a combination of professional
beauty care and an effective,
soothing massage. Skincare products
with specific active ingredients and
treatment sequence are selected to
suit individual skin requirements. All
SKINOVAGE PX products contain
two innovative, natural ingredients,
Alpine stem cells and OsmoTec, as
well as special active ingredients to
suit each specific skin type. The facial
is complemented by the ‘piece de
resistance’ – a head massage that my
fiancé is still raving about.
Lunch time arrives and it couldn’t
have come any sooner. Led back to
the Relaxation Room, we feast on a
gourmet BLT sandwich accompanied
by ‘pommes frites’ and fresh fruit
juice. The onsite Catharina’s Bistro
serves contemporary comfort food
and is named after the adventurous
founder of Steenberg, Catharina
Ras. We complete the day with the
perfect mani and pedi. The Elim Medi-
Heel products have revolutionised
pedicures – requiring no more filing,
blading and cracked, sore heels. In a
single treatment, this product removes
dead skin safely and effectively. The
solution is a completely safe chemical
peel for the feet. Medi-Heel literally
dissolves dead skin cells under the
feet, which are then scraped off
with a special tool by the therapist.
Followed up by a great exfoliation and
‘perfecting foot balm’, our tootsies
are now ready to roll, but not before
I get a spritz of gold, with the Medi-
perfect finish to my mani and pedi.
All in all, my day at the Ginkgo Day
friendly therapists, an intimate
space to share with the man I hold
WHAT'S
PUTTING
A fortune is spent
annually around the
globe on golf events
and at the very top of
this food chain are
the professional golf
tours’ tournaments
which fill our TV screens
every week.
The biggest of these in Africa (at
$1,250 000 the tournament still
offers the largest first prize in pro
golf) is the Nedbank Golf Challenge
at Sun City which takes place in the
first week of December each year.
My first visit to what has now become
known as the Nedbank Challenge
was to the inaugural event in 1981
in the tournament’s then guise as
‘The Million Dollar’ after which I was
based in Southbroom in KZN as the
Club’s golf professional from 1983
to 1988. I only next ‘got up’ to the
Million Dollar in 1987, which started
an unbroken run of attendance up to
1999.
This included a period where, through
my involvement with the Ballantines
Whisky sponsorship at hole number
14 and SABC’s radio coverage, I
‘lived’ at Sun City for the week of the
event. As it had been fifteen years
since I had last been to a Nedbank
Challenge, I was very curious to see
what changes had taken place. On
Friday morning I drove out from
Hartbeespoort and, having made
a smooth transition through the
security at the main gate, I found
parking (no mean feat that!) at a
very full complex. Having checked
in at the very well run media centre,
I stepped out into the tournament
area and the changes and additions
were soon pretty evident. Extended
merchandising, more grandstands
and bigger corporate hospitality
around the course, as opposed to it
being ‘centralised’ in and or around
the clubhouse area, were some of the
more noticeable changes. The most
significant non structural differences
were in the number of people on the
course on a Friday and the improved
experience offered to the general
public i.e. those not being hosted as
a sponsor’s guest.
The numbers seemed to be up in
attendance terms. Although I have
no statistical data to support this
feeling, everywhere I looked seemed
to be busier, rather like it used to be on
a weekend in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
The expanded corporate facilities
might account for my sense of there
being more people, but perhaps the
increase is also due to the event
becoming more spectator friendly.
The improvement in the general
facilities was particularly noticeable.
No longer a case of a gazillion Rand
for a hot dog and a warm cold drink
and a lucklustre customer service.
Instead; air-conditioned F&B areas,
clearly defined walkways, extended
entertainment after the golf has
finished for the day, lots of toilets,
polite course marshals and complex
security all combine to make the day
visitor feel like a valued and integral
part of the event, as opposed to an
‘extra’ of little value and only to be
tolerated while the real business was
conducted elsewhere.
Inside, the Nedbank Challenge has
transitioned from being a fun golf
event into a serious tournament with
an expanded field, lots more money,
order of merit points at stake and
the official sanction of the European
Tour. In the process the event’s
attractions have developed into
those associated with Wimbledon or
a Henley Regatta, where knowledge
of the finer points of either tennis or
rowing, are sublimated by the much
more important factor of being ‘seen’
at a major sport / social occasion.
When you combine the Nedbank
Challenge’s early December date,
with South Africa’s summer and the
major annual holiday season, the
tournament has obvious appeal.
The tournament offers an ideal
opportunity for companies to unwind
at year end with their staff, guests
and suppliers.
16

“
field
I was entertained for lunch in the Sun International, has been involved
Vodacom skybox and both the food
and the company were excellent. The
social nature of the event’s appeal
was reinforced by many of the people
I spoke to, both at the Vodacom
area and elsewhere. Many admitted
to being very poor or non golfers,
but said that they wouldn’t miss an
with just about everything in the event
management field at Sun City; from
rock concerts to Miss World pageants
and of course helping out with the
Nedbank Challenge each year. Carol
Lourens is integral to SAIL’s golf
event management capability, which
involves her looking after, amongst
opportunity, or turn down an invite many other events, Vodacom’s
to attend the Nedbank Challenge
because the event was ‘just great to
hospitality activities during the week
long Nedbank Challenge.
be at’. The general feeling was that
where else, within a relaxed social
atmosphere, could you see so many
people that you know or work with all
in one place.
A well run event is rather like a swan
swimming across a still pond with the
appearance that everything is serene
and controlled, but meanwhile, under
the water there is a flurry of activity.
The Nedbank Challenge owes its
success in no small part to three
factors; a great venue (as it’s our
‘own’ I sometimes think we forget just
how great Sun City is), a committed
brand partner in Nedbank and the
backroom team who are in effect, the
swan’s feet.
While I was at the event, I took the
opportunity to talk with two people who
have been involved with the Nedbank
Challenge for a number of years. Ian
Stewart, who retired in December
after almost 30 years of service with
Both Ian and Carol agree that the
matching up of permanent on-site
staff with the subcontractors is a good
example of the type of teamwork
essential to make a big event work
effectively. It is a relationship which
enables Sun City’s ‘home’ team to
concentrate on the delivery of the
event as a whole, while the ‘outside’
event management companies
handle the day-to-day requirements
of their clients during the event itself.
All successful events evolve and the
Nedbank Challenge is no exception.
Both Carol and Ian also agree that
coming back to the same venue each
year enables organisers to polish
and refine their offering, and avoids
the logistical nightmares with events
that keep moving to new venues
each year. Just to provide a glimpse
of what it takes to run a major event,
the following selected statistics, from
a huge inventory of requirements,
Inside, the Nedbank Challenge
has transitioned from being a
fun golf event into a serious
tournament with an expanded
will help to put your culinary efforts at
the family braai in some context and
underline the sheer volumes that are
involved in delivering a tournament
like the Nedbank Challenge:
Pork spare ribs:
Over 8 000 kg (that’s over 8 tonnes!)
Pure South African boerewors:
Over 3500 kg
Wild About game kebabs:
1 000 kg
Mini cheese:
28 800 portions
Ice used during the event:
19 000 kg
Ice creams consumed:
Almost 40 000 units
Soft drinks consumed:
Over 100 000 units
Bottles of water:
Almost 40 000 units
Number of extra staff employed:
Approx. 1 200 people
Additional man-hours:
84 000 hours
Congratulations must be given to
Nedbank, Sun International, Sun City
and all the sponsors for continuing to
bring such a well run event, with such
broad appeal, to our diaries each year.
Long may it continue!
NOOITGEDACHT
We often dream of a
avenues and landscaped lawns trace
a path to a fountained courtyard.
Evenings are spent catching up with
friends and neighbours at the local deli,
tucking into delicious food and wine or
simply watching the sun set behind
the mountain, while children play in
the well-manicured gardens. For the
residents of Nooitgedacht Village, this
lifestyle is less of a dream and more of
a reality. Nestled on the fringes of the
historic Boland town of Stellenbosch,
Nooitgedacht is one of the major
wine grape producers in the area and
fruits from the orchids are exported to
Europe and the Far East. The village
supplies some of the most prominent
Stellenbosch wine estates, including
Beyerskloof, Simonsig, Kanu and
L’Avenir. Drawing its design inspiration
from quaint European Villages, the
270-hectare, 17th-century estate
boasts a rich history and embraces
22

strong traditional community values.
The estate remains under the careful
custodianship of the Wirth family,
who have retained the land since
1923 when Fritz Otto Wirth bought
the farm from Cecil John Rhodes.
After careful consideration, the family
settled on developing an authentic
and sustainable village based on
the notion of the old European
settlements, where the shared village
experience cultivates a unified sense of
community. These villages encompass
every amenity required by dwellers in
order to live a safe and peaceful life.
Once fully completed, it is envisioned
that Nooitgedacht Village will have all
the necessary essentials for residents
to live their entire life in the village,
from cradle to grave. The viability of
the concept has been vindicated, with
many residents saying the reason they
were motivated to buy was the notion
of returning to an old-world village,
removed from the hustle and bustle
of the city, as well as a 43% growth
in investor value in th
months.
An exciting mix of re
and commercial comp
to create a diverse, saf
village. The Village Wa
and plenty of coffee

for the near future. Nearby is the
beautifully trimmed Village Park
adjacent to the Village Retreat,
which overlooks the picturesque
Simonsberg Valley.
Art is a chief aspect of life at
Nooitgedacht. Bronze Editions features
sculptures by a variety of well-known
South African artists and there are
proposals to relocate one of the
country’s top rugby museums to the
village. Future plans also include a
well-stocked library, music concerts, a
vintage festival and a gorgeous music
room, inspired by local resident, Liza
Joubert, of Koos Kombuis infamous
song, Liza se Klavier. Nooitgedacht
residents enjoy a wonderful wealth
of sporting activities that include golf
on the adjacent Devonvale course, a
state of the art gym, swimming pool,
squash and tennis courts and bowling
greens, and a boules court that will
open later this year.
A first class equestrian facility is also
on the cards. Furnished with stabling,
paddocks and enchanting riding
trials, it will allow seasoned riders the
opportunity to practice and new riders
the chance to partake in this leisurely
pastime. A resident tack shop will also
cater to the needs of homeowners
and equestrian enthusiasts from the
area. The pristine Nooitgedacht Farm
provides a sprawling 200-hectare
scenic landscape, including over 5
kilometres of walking paths, dedicated
mountain biking and an 8-hectare
dam for fishing and canoeing.
Residents can picnic near the river,
lie peacefully and read books under
230-year-old oak trees. With the
majestic Simonsberg and Stellenbosch
Mountain peaks providing a
breathtaking backdrop, Nooitgedacht
is widely recognised as one of the
best wedding and event venues
in the Western Cape, with 71
functions booked in 2014. Whilst
the original stone walls and other
key architectural features have been
retained, the venue has undergone
vast renovations and can now
accommodate up to 300 guests. The
Successfully creating rural and
urban living, Southdowns
Residential Estate is the
perfect setting for young
professionals who crave a
quaint agricultural lifestyle,
just a stone’s throw from the city.
Lying within Centurion, with its
weeping willows, tree-lined streets
and the meandering Hennops River
at its heart, the sleepy suburb of Irene
remains a choice piece of Highveld
land. Nestled in its centre, conveniently
just off the N1, is the highly sought
after Southdowns Residential Estate,
offering a truly impressive farming
community, just 3 kilometres from the
Centurion Gautrain station. Maintaining
a rich authenticity throughout, each of
the eventual 730 free-standing homes
exudes a rustic charm. Best described
as Highveld, Victorian and turn of the
century architectural vernacular, the
contemporary interpretation creates a
successful piece of the past in present
day Centurion.
As well as being located close to
public transport, there are a number
of amenities situated directly across
from the estate’s main gate. For those
looking to eliminate the daily commute
to work entirely, Southdowns Business
Park offers offices for rent and
Southdowns’ 40-store shopping centre
offers anything and everything, from
banks to toy shops, entertainment
facilities and well-known furniture
stores. Finally, Southdown College,
a private co-educational school
currently teaching 1550 learners from
Grades 000 to 12, enjoys a fantastic
reputation amongst locals and comes
complete with its own fully fledged
theatre.Nature is at the epicentre of
this community. The estate is actively
involved with the Birdlife Northern
Gauteng Association
bird watching morn
established. Held quart
the year, residents can
a wide variety of indig
well as Egyptian gee
yellow-bill and white-f
bill teal, moorhens and
The estate also enjoys
relationship with the
Dairy Farm. This is a
farm with a herd o
cows, some of which
the estate land, much
of local children. The f
mielies/corn on land
of and belonging to
invites residents to ma
two restaurants, da
daily milking sessions.
stunning fully functio
facilities that can
anything from a tod

party and full scale wedding to
corporate team building events.
The estate is covered by some 46
hectares of conservation corridors
and agricultural areas. Approximately
6000 indigenous trees and plants
can be found on the estate, including
the Stinkwoods, River Bush Willows,
Black Monkey thorns, Black Karees
and wild olives. Residents are also
encouraged to use indigenous plant
material in their gardens. Thirteen
kilometres of meandering walking
trails allow residents to explore and
appreciate the mild Highveld climate
and its breath-taking scenery in all
its beauty. A number of communal
parks, furnished with dedicated
children’s play areas and jungle
gyms, further lure families outdoors
to enjoy this safe and natural lifestyle.
Residents have direct access to
and automatically become social
members of the Irene Country
Club. Voted the Best Golf Course in
Gauteng last year, the club offers
seasoned and inexperienced golfers a
discounted resident’s rate. In addition
to the magnificent golf course, estate
dwellers can also utilise the squash
and tennis courts, cricket, hockey
and bowling facilities, along with a
lovely entertainment area.
As with any estate, service and safety
is crucial and Southdowns Estate is
unique in offering a full spectrum of
services administered entirely by the
estate’s management. The Home
Owners Association manages all
the internal services including water,
electricity, gas, telecommunication
and sanitation. This sustainable
model allows the estate management
to sustain more control and limits
the number of service people on the
property, thus increasing security.
Southdowns is serviced by a
dedicated Sasol gas pipeline directly
from Northern Mozambique, a wholly
unique concept never before used in
South Africa. Each home is connected
to the natural gas pipe line for water
and underfloor heating, as well as
when braaing and cooking, helping to
reduce monthly power expenses by
almost half – an extremely attractive
additional feature given the current
energy crisis engulfing the country.
A top of the range FTTH (Fibre to the
Home) optic cable service to each
household ensures superior internet
connectivity and communication.
With service provider ATEC as their
technology partner, this feature once
again only enhances property values
and the quality of business and
lifestyle. Proud of their incident-free
track record, the estate incorporates
military specification thermal imaging
cameras covering the perimeter of
the estate.
A top of the range electric fence,
regular dog and vehicle patrols, and
an in-house control and monitor
room form parts of the daily security
measures. A new Clear Vu fence
will also be erected in 2015, with
access controlled by biometric finger
printing. In developing the estate,
Southdowns Management Services
has built an ingenious sustainable
business model that goes far beyond
land and property sales. With an a
current estimated total value of R3.5
billion and rated best luxury Suburb
Southdowns should be a notable
Investing in Your Business
A
new year marks
the start of a clean
slate, and a chance to
reinvigorate morale and
energy into your team.
Identifying missing or
unrefined skills of certain individuals
in the team, or the business as a
whole, is a great way to begin injecting
positivity and drive. Not only will this
improve the overall efficiency and
competitiveness of your business,
but individuals will also benefit from
an enriched and progressive skillset…
and those frightened by the thought
of going back to school need not
panic.
Though an option, enhancing
of a skillset doesn’t
necessarily mean investing in
higher education. Increasing
one’s knowledge in a
certain area and developing
competencies need only take
a few short hours per day
relationships to those that have stood
the test of time, temperamental and
argumentative ones to passionate,
our alternative Valentine’s Day gift
in the most unique way yet.
Domestic Hors d’oeuvres
Bypassing the battle for restaurant
bookings doesn’t mean you won’t
still be able to feast on a sumptuous
3-course meal created by a talented
chef. Rent a Chef allows you to
experience restaurant-quality dining
in the comfort of your own home.
Professionally trained chefs Uwe
Weiman and Thando Aaron are
based in Cape Town and, together,
boast a wealth of experience in the
fine dining, catering and hospitality
industry. They will personally meet
with you prior to your proposed date
and discuss your preferences and
dietary requirements before creating
a deliciously tailored menu. The duo
are happy to create a menu dictated
to them by an individual or couple,
but prefer being left to their own
devices, producing a 3-course meal
full of tantalising flavours.
Better still, the chefs arrive fully
equipped and are entirely responsible
for the shopping, cooking and even
clean-up on the day. Plus, just like a
restaurant, the table is exquisitely set,
decked in all the trimmings, and they
even ensure the candles remain lit
throughout the evening. So whether
you have put the kids to bed early or
simply want to enjoy a quiet dinner
in the comfort of your sweatpants
and not have to worry if something is
burning in the oven, Rent a Chef is the
perfect alternative. All you need to do
is hand over your kitchen, then sit back
and relax… and their complete service
package means you don’t even need
to worry about the washing up. Prices
vary depending on ingredients, but a
couple’s booking costs approximately
R800 and includes a bottle of sparkling
wine. A non-refundable deposit is also
required to secure your booking.
The Sky’s the Limit
If you are looking for that cloud nine
effect, then Sani Mountain Lodge,
quite literally, will have your head
the very tip of Sani Pass, this world
heritage site is on the border between
South Africa and Lesotho.
level, the lodge stands the highest
in Africa. The curvy, often steep and
rough terrain can only be accessed
via a hired 4x4 vehicle and the
quaint hideaway offers a relaxed and
peaceful atmosphere for city dwellers
to escape the hustle and bustle of
their ordinary routine.
The rustic period features are in
keeping with the surroundings’
nature. A host of activities are on offer
to meet every need, from hiking trails
to horse riding, cycling to skiing and
snowboarding in the winter months.
