Dear Readers,
During these unprecedented times, I hope that you, your
families and friends are safe and well. We face a very
challenging period both in and outside our workplaces, but
humanity is resilient, as is the oil and gas sector, and together
we will overcome these troubled days.
It has certainly been an interesting few months as people
around the world adjust to working at home, and for many,
it has been a great opportunity to spend more time with
their children and families. We are currently witnessing how
working and business practices will change as a result of
the COVID-19 pandemic and some changes will be more
positive than others. But the one thing for certain is the need
for individuals and companies to adapt and evolve to the
challenges we are facing. Within the oil patch, I believe the
next few years will be a battle of strongest, with technology
development and increased efficiency the key to survival, with
digitalisation being the key tool to unlock this potential.
On a personal note, I have been very impressed with the
systems and practices that have been put into place within
the oil sector during this pandemic. Operators, drilling
contractors and services companies have continued their
great work during some extremely difficult times, with many
shifts and working patterns extended. But the resilience and
strength of those working in the field never ceases to amaze
me and my congratulations and respect must be paid to the
entire oil sector, especially to those working long hours and
extended rotations, often in hazardous conditions.
simply amazing, risking everything to help and assist those
who they have never met before.
Coming back to this issue of ROGTEC we start with a great
article from Professor Valery Kulchitskiy, discussing the
transformation to digital supervision. Gazprom Neft discusses
their own efforts to create a cost effective Smart Well program,
plus they also discuss how they are increasing production
from fracturing low permeability reservoirs. Additionally, we
have an article looking at MPD in deep-water wells and
how dual gradient drilling can help significantly reduce well
construction costs.
I hope you all enjoy this issue and I look forward to any
feedback.
Best regards,

I would also like to take this opportunity to praise the medical
workers, doctors and support staff who have endured so
much on the front lines in this war on COVID-19, and who are
the last hope for so many people. These front line workers are
