Uranium mining in Sweden
It started with Ranstad in the beginning of the
fifties. Sweden wanted to have nuclear weapons
too. We wanted to have our own Nuclear power
plants, both concerning construction and fuel. So
the government decided to allow strip mining in
the alun clay layer in Middel-sweden.
205 tons uranium ore was extracted for use in the
two heavy water reactors under construction. But
the Swedish reactors failed –the first was never
put on the grid, the second had a severe accident
with the fuel rods.
