The essays, included in this collection, are wide-ranging. As a result,
treatment in some areas appears episodic. Nonetheless, the volume’s
strength lies in the degree to which it privileges complexity, effectively destabilizing
more simplistic scholarly approaches. The collection, as a whole,
offers a timely corrective to constructs that have routinely collapsed Alexandrian
history into a straightforward recounting of a series of welldocumented
events. While granting the relative richness of extant documents
and artifacts of Alexandrian provenance, each of the volume’s contributors
urges caution in reconstructing a totalizing narrative that
purports to capture the multifaceted textures of the Alexandrian landscape.
In a particularly pointed critique, Anders Klostergaard Petersen observes
that despite the fact that much of the scholarship on ancient Alexandria
emphasizes the limited nature of extant sources, that limitation is routinely
overlooked in the course of developing a particular argument. Countering
the impulse to exalt the “singular to the status of the general” (121), this
collection troubles facile readings of ancient history, emphasizing instead
the contradictions and ambivalences that constitute the very structure of
human experience.

Silentium är en skriftserie som snart har tio år på nacken. Genom dessa
skrifter har svensk läsekrets kunnat bekanta sig dels med viktiga röster inom
den östliga monastiska traditionen (som Isak Syriern och Matta al-Miskîn),
men även med skrifter från moderna svenska bedjare (som Martin Lönnebo
och Gunnel Vallquist). Med publiceringen av den första volymen av
Paradiset: Ökenfädernas tänkespråk, den systematiska samlingen påbörjas det
ambitiösa projektet att översätta hela den grekiska systematiska samlingen
av Apophthegmata Patrum till svenska. Denna samling innehåller tjugoen
kapitel som publiceras i separata små volymer, som sedan kommer tryckas i
en komplett volym när helheten är översatt. Det kapitel som nu föreligger i
svensk översättning har titeln ”De heliga fädernas råd för den som söker
fullkomlighet” och består av 37 apophthegmata.
Boken inleds med ett kort förord av Per Rönnegård och Samuel
Rubenson. Här påminns läsaren om det faktum att samlingen innehåller material
hämtat från många olika håll och som utrycker många olika synsätt.
