Walpurgis
Night Race
international kåranen2
In the end of April it is time for the annual Walpurgis Night Race. We
called up matz bergström from VSIF (Västerås Students’ Sports Association)
to talk about it:
What is the Walpurgis Night Race ?
It is a five kilometer fitness race which is arranged by VSIF and Mälardalen’s Student
Union. We are responsible for the race and the Student Union is responsible for
the location, the entertainment, the food and all activities that take place afterwards.
When does it take place ?
The 28th of April in Västerås. The race is located at the outskirts of the city center.
Start and finish is at the Campus, Origo, at the cycle track between the café and the
parking lot. It starts at 18.30 but there will be activities on the area at 17.00, where
you also get your number tag.
Do you have to register in advance ?
Yes, there is a web based application at our website ( www.vsif.nu ). For members the
fee is 80 SEK, for others it is 120 SEK.
Can you join the race even if you are not a student?
Of course! But the race is first and foremost for students and staff.
Is the race divided into different fitness levels ?
No, everyone will be running the same path at the same time. We might have an
academic challenge for the staff.
Will there be any activities afterwards ?
Yes, at around 20.00, when everyone has finished, there will be entertainment and
food at Kåren. There will also be some sort of surprise on the actual track.
Is there anything else in winning it besides the glory ?
Yes, there will be several prizes in different categories.
Why are you arranging this ?
We think that it is good that something is happening on Campus ! We are an association
which is in great process. This is part of our vision – to become a natural
part of Mälardalen’s University.
Why do the participants have to pay a fee ?
There are some costs for the event, and besides a well put together race, the participants
get an evening at Kåren with food, entertainment and distribution of prizes.
Also, we are a nonprofit association with limited resources. The fee is a way for us to
pay rent for the premises used in the different sports activities, which is the main part
of our work, but also to be able to improve student’s sports in general.
Could you participate although your stamina is not what is should
be ?
Of course ! The track is just as nice walking around it. Since it is a fitness race, the
main focus is the social part – that everyone has a great night.
