long<br />

Learning<br />

Just imagine the nice feeling<br />

<strong>of</strong> receiving your hard earned<br />

certificate or diploma after completing<br />

some years <strong>of</strong> studying, and saying<br />

with a deep sigh, “At last this is<br />

over!” Then you mentally hang <strong>of</strong>f<br />

and think that you can just draw from<br />

what you have learnt so far. But we<br />

cannot afford to have such a mediocre<br />

attitude.<br />

Never Stop Learning<br />

People who have stopped learning are<br />

on a backward path, they have shifted<br />

to the reverse gear. Learning is like<br />

rowing upstream, if you stop, you<br />

go backwards. Currently, information<br />

doubles every four years, compared to<br />

every 25 years 100 years ago. Therefore<br />

we cannot afford to be ignorant about<br />

what is going on around us. The<br />

prophet Hosea had to acknowledge<br />

that his people were destroyed from<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Some<br />

are already old but they still keep<br />

reading, and through this process, they<br />

develop their minds. If we stop growing<br />

intellectually, we start growing old,<br />

whatever our age may be.<br />

Combine Knowledge with<br />

Wisdom<br />

The Bible has much to say about our<br />

mind. Especially the book <strong>of</strong> Proverbs<br />

talks about the practical application <strong>of</strong><br />

knowledge and wisdom to the matters<br />

<strong>of</strong> life. Solomon encourages us to be<br />

wise and listen and add to our learning<br />

(Prov. 1:5). He says that we need to<br />

“get wisdom and get understanding”<br />

(Prov. 4:5). Those who are eager and<br />

ready to learn more are intelligent<br />

people in his eyes (Prov. 18:15).<br />

Consequently, knowledge alone has<br />

not much value if it is not combined<br />

with wisdom. Wisdom enables us<br />

to apply knowledge properly and<br />

effectively in order to make wise<br />

decisions. Solomon continues with<br />

the fact that we can receive the<br />

greatest academic honor and still be<br />

foolish (Prov. 3:15). The source <strong>of</strong><br />

true wisdom is God, and we may come<br />

boldly to Him and ask for this kind <strong>of</strong><br />

wisdom that we so desperately need<br />

(James 1:5). True wisdom is <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

contrary to the ideas <strong>of</strong> this world<br />

(1 Cor. 1:18). To us Christians, Christ<br />

and the cross is the power and the<br />

wisdom <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

Jesus also Grew in his Mind<br />

It is interesting to note that Jesus<br />

Christ, the Son <strong>of</strong> God, also grew in<br />

wisdom and knowledge (Luke 2:52)<br />

and people were amazed with his<br />

teaching (Luke 2:47). While staying<br />

with his parents in Nazareth for<br />

nearly 30 years, he worked under the<br />

watchful eye <strong>of</strong> his step father Joseph<br />

and was able to make valuable lessons<br />

in life, even learning to be submissive<br />

and obedient (Heb 5:8).<br />

The apostle Paul is also known as a<br />

thinker. Even in prison, before his<br />

execution, he doesn’t want his mind<br />

to be idle. He writes his last letter to<br />

Timothy and asked for his books and<br />

scrolls (2 Tim 4:13) to keep on reading<br />

and learning. He could have had many<br />

excuses.<br />

We usually excuse ourselves with<br />

not having enough time, but we all<br />

have the same amount <strong>of</strong> time. It<br />

just depends how we use it. Yes, time<br />

is flying, but remember: you’re the<br />

pilot. So train yourself in the practice<br />

<strong>of</strong> managing your time well with the<br />

important things in life.<br />

Don’t Graduate from the School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Life<br />

All great men and women were active<br />

learners. Ben Carson, the famous Black<br />

American neurosurgeon, propagated<br />

learning through reading books.<br />

“Active reading,” he says, “is much<br />

better than lectures and watching<br />

television.” TV influences us more<br />

than we think.<br />

Ability in critical thinking skills,<br />

logical analysis <strong>of</strong> important issues,<br />

and rational problem-solving skills is<br />

low among high school and college<br />

students, and it seems to be rapidly<br />

decreasing through the modern media.<br />

We need to train our mind to think.<br />

God has created our mind and we need<br />

to use it to His glory. Remember, we<br />

should love Him with all our mind (Matt<br />

22:37). We only use 10%<br />

capacity <strong>of</strong> what God<br />

has in store<br />

stretched. We<br />

Christians have<br />

been called to a<br />

life that demands the<br />

very best that we have to<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer (1 Cor. 9:24). Therefore<br />

we need to practice the art <strong>of</strong><br />

self-discipline (1 Cor. 9:25-27). We<br />

need to learn to lead our life well in order to be <strong>of</strong> a positive influence to others.<br />

Let’s constantly expand our minds. The temptation is strong to lie back and think<br />

the way others think. We must make sure that the guidance and direction we<br />

provide is the result <strong>of</strong> our own thinking and personal spade work, not merely<br />

the repetition <strong>of</strong> popular opinion.<br />

We will realize that time taken in sharpening our intellect and equipping our<br />

mind through the practices <strong>of</strong> intellectual self-leadership will not be wasted.<br />

In fact, our tasks will be easier and more effective in direct proportion to the<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> time we invest in sharpening our saw.<br />

Practical suggestions in life long learning<br />

People <strong>of</strong> great influence constantly<br />

learn through their experiences. They<br />

read, search for answers, and enroll<br />

themselves in courses. They work on<br />

correspondence studies, ask intelligent<br />

questions, and listen attentively.<br />

We still have the possibility to<br />

work independently on Theological<br />

Correspondence Courses (TCC). If you<br />

have any interest to grow in spirit,<br />

learn more about God, and stretch<br />

your mind, you may contact the<br />

Publications Department and order a<br />

course (K15.- printing costs).<br />

• Choose books wisely.<br />

• Be determined to spend a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> half an hour a day<br />

reading books.<br />

• Read with pencil and notebook in<br />

hand. Write notes or make mind<br />

maps and little drawings.<br />

• Discuss what you have read with<br />

friends.<br />

• Make authors <strong>of</strong> good Christian<br />

books become your mentors.<br />

• Read biographies <strong>of</strong> mature<br />

Christian men and women <strong>of</strong> God.<br />

They may become like role models<br />

in your life. Christopher Morley<br />

(1890-1957) said: “When you give<br />

someone a book, you don't give<br />

him just paper, ink, and glue. You<br />

give him the possibility <strong>of</strong> a whole<br />

new life.”<br />

• You may read good books more<br />

than only once.<br />

• Think creatively while reading.<br />

• Check out spiritually mature<br />

people and ask them questions<br />

about the challenges <strong>of</strong> life. Ask<br />

them how they have gone through<br />

difficulties, and listen carefully.<br />

“Attention is our greatest<br />

resource” (Daniel Goleman).<br />

• Learn by observing things and<br />

people. Creation is full <strong>of</strong> sermons<br />

and mature Christians that act<br />

as good role models can be like<br />

fathers and mothers.<br />

• Learn from experience. “We do<br />

not only learn from experience. We<br />

learn from disciplined reflection<br />

on experience” (Michael Jinkins).<br />

• Above all, read the Word <strong>of</strong> God<br />

systematically, attentively, with<br />

an obedient heart, to act upon<br />

His Word.<br />

Working on correspondence courses is<br />

a helpful way <strong>of</strong> learning. Benjamin<br />

Franklin once said: “Tell me and I<br />

forget. Teach me and I remember.<br />

Involve me and I learn.”<br />

Please check out your church if they<br />

are running any TEE courses and get<br />

yourself involved.<br />

We’ve never graduated from the School<br />

<strong>of</strong> life. Each challenge and experience<br />

becomes a possibility to learn and<br />

to grow. God is “building” our life<br />

in order to make us useful for His<br />

purpose. Therefore, if you want to be<br />

<strong>of</strong> an effective influence you need to<br />

be a life-long learner.<br />

Please make this commitment with<br />

me: “I will cultivate the habit <strong>of</strong><br />

studying the scripture or other<br />

inspirational literature; train my<br />

mind in reading, visualizing, writing,<br />

planning, pondering and listening,<br />

and so maintain the habit <strong>of</strong> being a<br />

life-long learner.”<br />

Remember: unless you have learnt<br />

something today, you are not growing!<br />
