His concerto for horn and stringswas composed between 1960 and 1962,and was first performed by Jože Falout, together with the RTV Slovenia SymphonyOrchestra, under the direction of conductorBogo Leskovic. The concerto was alsocommissioned by, and therefore written for,Falout.Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn, andStrings, written in 1943, is a song cycleset around six poems by different Englishpoets. The theme of the songs is nightand the darker aspects that accompanyit. Serenade is one of the most importantof Britten’s works and his opinion that itwas a trivial, though pleasant piece seemsalmost incomprehensible. When writing it thecomposer had in mind the renowned singerPeter Pears and horn player Dennis Brain, splendid English artists who were the firstto perform the serenade. The compositionremains one of the most important forconcert tenors and horn players. This time itwill be performed by Boštjan Lipovšek, ourexcellent horn player, and the English tenor,Nicholas Mulroy, who is an established andversatile artist.Jean Sibelius was often criticized forbeing too conservative and for failing tofollow modern developments in music. These criticisms did not bother him as heis often quoted as saying “Never pay anyattention to what critics say … Remember,a statue has never been set up in honourof a critic!” Sibelius’s Symphony No.5 wascommissioned by the Finnish governmentto mark the composer’s fiftieth birthday, andwas completed in Helsinki in 1915. It waslater revised into the version we are familiarwith today.
